Replace CDR22 to fit Blue Tooth Car Kit and IPOD friendly unit

Hi there,

I need a bluetooth car kit and to play my Ipod classic (160Gb) in my car. I could fit a separate kit for each. With the size of the cabin that is going to seem like lots more wires and gadgets which I would like to avoid.

I was thinking of replacing the CDR22 with a new headset that has the Ipod and blue tooth built in. I would like to have the Ipod in the lockable console and be able to control the Ipod from the headset unit.

I have done some digging around and all of the options seem to have problems, such as:
Alpine iDA X100 (£200) - funky design and built for Ipod. However, seems to regularly have problems with the Ipod classic, does not have an option to set colour to amber, plus have to pay for extra Bluetooth module (£80) and high speed cable.

Alpine CDE104BTi (£199) - CD player included, bluetooth built in and high speed ipod cable included. Downside is no control over display colour (I want amber) and not very attractive. Also not sure of sound quality. Alpine make a big deal of the Imprint feature to get the music quality tip top but it is an expensive extra (£150) I am not sure if that is a thing I need permanently or whether a good installer would set up the car.

JVC AVX44 (£270) - Has all the features but downsides are no RDS, slow Ipod interface navigation and mixed music quality.

Kenwood KDC-W9537U (£325) - Top end price wise but gets decent comments on sound quality. However, needs extra £80 Bluetooth kit

Then there are double DIN units like Kenwood DNX8220BT(£999) which are way more expensive and require two DIN space.

Then there are ones that have Aux in but no Ipod control - Clarion FB289RBT, Becker range, Sony

Has anyone on the forum gone through this on a 986? Any ideas?

Thanks

Apologies to the purists for even suggesting taking out the factory fitted unit!!

That kit doesn't work for the CDR22, as far as I can see.

However, it would mean I would then add the Becker Grand Prix (£300) to the list above. It has the yellow display and has all the features but the Ipod kit is an extra at £80.

Thanks

You can use the CD Prep already in the car to connect to the iPod. You have to select the tracks etc on the iPod itself though.
This doesn't help with the Bluetooth either...

So my 986 came with an aftermarket unit when i brought it and it was pretty crap, so I installed the Alpine iDA X001 (older version X100 you are considering), and the colour bothered me too, but it turns out the buttons etc can either be blue or red, so I used red, doesn't quite match but its not too bad either. I couple that with KCE-300 alpine bluetooth adapter.

The bluetooth works ok, but on my version it shows calling and after you answer it shows the caller, kinda of crap, sometimes the phone does not auto connect but you can force the connection from the unit, just seems some phones connect better then others, can't see any other reasoning. The sound is via the speakers so you can hear everything fine as you can blast the volume, but too loud and it will send an echo back to the caller, the mic is ok although I do find myself leaning forward towards it, the car is noisy so not too much you can do. I am happy using it for personal calls, but would never take a work conference call on it, too much noise for the other parties. Oh yeah it syncs your address book and calls, again it hit and miss on each phone, my blackeberry worked fine, iphone 3g syncs, but the names and numbers are binary so pretty useless, so its better for receving the calls then making them.

The ipod works perfectly and as its full speed, quick too, the artwork shows up too which my son loves, the quality is as good as the source download and your audio eqiupment. The pain on the x001 is that the center button on the dial is menu button and does work as enter, but I hear that was changed in the later models, so x100 should be fine.

If you do need to use the phone in the car, I find that the jawbone bluetooth headset is the business, even going on the motorway the caller thinks your sitting in your office, the noise cancellation is just amazing, can't recommend this enough, but means you have to carry it around and charge etc etc.

Not sure if anything I said is of any use to you :)
