Replace OEM loudspeakers

CCL

New member
The speakers in my 964 are in a terrible state - crackle and different volumes. This is not the head unit, I have checked that.

So I think I need new speakers. But I do not want to affect the OEM grilles in any way.

Anyone come across this problem?

Thanks!

Chris

Hi Chris,

I had the same problem with my speakers. I ended up fitting JBL 6x4 inch speakers that I bought new from Ebay. If you do a search for 6X4 speakers you will find a pair. There are 2 types one is more expensive than the other (I bought the more expensive ones) The standard grilles will cover the speakers I used a small amount of glue just to hold them in place and it looks standard . With regard to the fronts I fitted a pair of 5 1/4 inch 3 way pioneer speakers into the standard holes and again managed to use the standard grilles. My advice would be to remove one of the fronts and take it with you when you go to look at speakers to make sure its all going to fit correctly ie hole centers/depth etc. You will be fine with most 5 1/4 inch but its better to check first.

As I said I have the more expensive ones and they are 'ok' not as good sound as say a new car but perfectly acceptable. You are restricted because of depth so I thought these were the best solution.

Let us know how you get on.

Whilst aimlessly browsing I noticed this post.

From recent experience changing fronts on my 993RS I think the std fit fronts are actually 6". Most replacements are 6 1/4" or 5 3/4".

If you can find 6" ones they'll fit without drilling and for a given speaker give more bass than the 5 3/4".

I used some £17 ones from Maplins as frankly in an RS you can't hear much quality once rolling!

Hi Chris,

If it's the Fronts, just done this on my 1990 C4 to find the originals still fitted and completely disintegrated.
replaced them with Pioneer 1301i (dual cone). 49euros here, not sure in the UK. They fit straight behind the original covers, though you do need to open the hole in the plastic backing plate by a couple of mils. I used a Stanley knife, but a file would do.
Here's the method, as explained on another forum :-
Carefully prize off the speaker cover (work your way round ).
Remove the lower door tray (1 screw front, 3 underneath, 1 at the back, 1 under the flap in the door bin - front).
This carpeted piece can be moved to access the speaker screws, but may pop off.
If so, the crossover box inhibits it clicking back into place, so needs 'manipulating'.
The speakers I mentioned (13cm Pioneer 1301i) fit almost perfectly.
I did need to trim the inner circle of the black plastic backing plate with a Stanley/craft knife to open it a little.
Changing both speakers is possible in about 30mins, but give yourself an hour.
You need a Philips screwdriver PH2 (or PZ2), a pair of pliers to close the spade connector for a tight fit and a Stanley Knife.

Rgds,
Jon
