Replace PCM2 with PCM3

How easy would it be to replace PCM2 with PCM3 on a 1st gen 997?

Why would I want to do that? Well whilst our 997RS is in having its engine split to trace and hopefully stop an oil leak, the engine was being loving tended inside and the rest of the car was in the OPC "secure" compound unlocked (battery disconnected). Some scrotes decided they wanted a selection of PCM units from the OPC, four from new cars, 2 from cars in for work; one of which was ours!! Lets just say the thread I posted on a private forum elsewhere contained a lot of Anglo-Saxon expletives.

So the head unit has been prised out and the cables to it cut

Now I was considering getting a mObridge ipod/bluetooth unit fitted. Now if I could get a PCM3 unit fitted they could be built in.

PS I believe the PCM2 header unit they nicked is next to useless as I believe it is coded to the car

John, gutted to hear this news [:(][:'(]

I'm not sure myself if it can be done being as the PCM is made by a different manufacturer..

You're right about the coding of the PCM, however I do wonder what they can do with a PC and a bit of time??

Sorry to hear the news about your car. Unfortunately web forums can be very useful for both honest and dishonest people. The number of threads on retro fitting PCM's is bound to raise interest with thieves looking to make a quick buck on e bay. To be honest i would not bother with fitting another PCM , look at getting either Pioneer or Kenwood in its place. The basic head unit is less than the PCM, better supported map wise and also has bluetooth, MP3 capability and touchscreen as standard. The unit drops straight in place of the OEM PCM , all you need is a Porsche aftermarket face plate to act as a surround. The face plate is made by Porsche for the Gen 2 997/987 in asia markets where the becker unit is not supplied. The only issue with fitting on a gen 1 car is the colour is black rather than volcano grey, so it will need repainting.

Dreadful news - i bet the OPC insurers are really pleased with the breach of security. One thing you don't want is a botched wiring loom, so ensure they replace the full length of the sections required for the centre console items.

Spoke to OPC today. PCM3 cannot go in a gen1 car, even if wiring loom is being replaced.. OPC said they could sell loads of PCM3s to PCM2 owners if it were possible

Would be tempted by alternative to PCM, but replacement will be on OPC insurance so no doubt will have to be OEM product, and fitting alternative would def mean no extended warranty. Even fitting iPod/bluetooth adapter that is non-Porsche will void extended warranty as is connected to wiring loom.

Will probably go for Porsche iPod adapter, and hope that they decide to bring out bluetooth adapter for PCM2 too

Didn't nick DVD drive for the unit, so don't know what they plan to connect it to!

Porsche will tell you officially that a lot of things cannot be done. The PCM is a stand alone unit , its only interface with the rest of the car being the CAN gateway to allow the PWIS unit to interface and communicate with it , plus the CAN info to the main dashboard display. Porsche will only support or agree to fitting equipment if its covered by an existing workshop tech bulletin.

OPC seemed to imply that PCM3 spoke a different language to the ECU, so unless that is changed or re-programmed it won't work with PCM3.

PCM3 is now provided in the Gen I Turbo - as berty987 intimates it is more than likely technically possible to plug it in, however software changes/versioning which hasn't been back-tested on your variant could be another factor which they have to consider.

Given that Porsche will only approve and warrant the equipment the the OE spoecification, there is no way they will do a retro fit of PCM3, whether technically feasible or not.
