replacement Aircon Compressor

I have just picked up my car from the aircon specialist having had a new condensor fitted now the system is pressurised and ready to run the compressor / pump has a problem with it when activated it can be heard with a loud clunk and when the arcon is turned off a continuous spin for a few seconds as the clutch disengages and the compressor part free wheels therfore not driving the compressor unit .

Does anyone know of a supplier or rebuild company or the make and part number for our cars the closest I have been is from a US site with detailed photos is a Nippon Denso model GE 171.

Nippon Denso pumps are used in modern cars has anyone come across an aftermarket replacement for the 944 or had theirs refurbished

failing this I will replace with a working used unit if I can locate one

I believe that while you're right it's a Nippon Denso and it probably shares some internals with compressors on other cars that the housing is unique to the 944 and is integral to the unit. In other words to replace the housing on another compressor to make it fit the 944 involves opening the unit.

A mate had the same problem you describe (I think from your description anyway). He thought the shaft had snapped because the pulley would spin with no connection to the compressor part. He'd spent a fair bit of time trying to fix it prior also. His car now has my old compressor in it.

I had mine rebuilt by a company called BBA Remnufacturing, but I think they have stopped doing it now, you could try ringing them to see???

They are on 01634 230055.

If they are no good let me know as I do have some other suppliers of new or reconditioned units at home (I am away till next monday so cannot do it till then) and I will forward the details to you.

If my memory serves me right a new/reconditioned unit was approx £290

I purchased a second hand compressor with a 30 day warranty from a well known second hand parts specialist earlier this year for about £150. Unfortunately it packed up after about 40 days. In the end I went for a remanufactured unit from eurocarparts http://www.eurocarparts.com . I can't remember the price exactly, maybe around £350 exchange.
