Replacement Brake Discs...

Can anyone advise whether OPCs are just as competitive price-wise for new brake discs for a 993 C4S...?

 
Not sure about the actual price once the decision is made to change - but my experience is that OPCs have a tendancy to want to change your disks at the slightest hint of brown discolouration, whereas indies take more practical approaches. So if you have been to an OPC and they have advised changing them, worth at least getting a second opinion.

Mine so far
Mot 1 (OPC) passed but you will need to change your disks at next service
Mot 2 (indy) passed, (me: are disks OK?, indy: yes, fine)
Mot 3 (indy) we will need to skim your disks - done
Mot 4 (indy) we need to skim your front disks and the rears will need to be replaced (too much rust on inner surface) - done

So if I had gone back to OPC my disks would have been changed ages ago. What I don't know of course is if the brakes would have been better if they had been changed.
 
Thanks Mark... PORSCHE Byfleet have advised that discs will still be OK for a while if I dont intend to do TRACK-DAYs !! So just doing some research for the future... The brakes all feel strong at the moment ...

What I have read so far indicates that OEM PORSCHE Brake Discs are the ones to go for ... and thats fine with me... What type of brake pads are recommended for (fast) road use...?

 
Are you talking about a price for parts only or fitted? I find when you include the club discount then the OPC price for discs is there or thereabouts when compared to the specialists' price for genuine Porsche discs. You can of course get repro's much cheaper but I personally wouldn't fit these to my car.

Pads are a different matter. Textar make the pads for Porsche and have previously confirmed that the ones in the Porsche box are exactly the same as the ones in the Textar box. There's a post here somewhere on this. So you can either buy genuine Porsche pads for £145 or Textar ones for £50 an axle, either way you will have exactly the same pads as Porsche intended. I don't go for either, the EBC reds I have on just now are really good but do take a bit of time to heat up, especially after I wash the car for some reason. Once they are heated up though they don't seem to cool off too quick. Possibly the Pagid blacks that I had previously were maybe a bit better for fast road use as they were sharper earlier but they definately didn't have the stopping power of the EBC's. I also fitted steel hoses which made quite an improvement in the pedal feel.

If you are including the fitting charges into the equation then an OPC is going to be significantly more than an indie. All the parts will be charged at top dollar, including those Textar pads at somewhere in excess of £150 an axle! (Plus I don't think an OPC would fit any other make of pad if you fancied something different)

I was refering to PARTS ONLY - and then to get a good INDIE to replace and fit parts...

Thxs for the advice - I always prefer to fit OEM parts so definitely will be "Porsche" discs... Insofar as pads go, I dont do trackdays, only 'fast' road use... so again sounds like Textar or Pagid Blacks?


 
Found OPC competitive for the discs but bought Textar pads from Design 911 as they were cheaper than the OPC and are the same brand that Porsche supply anyway.

Beware if you go for non genuine Porsche discs as I have known some after market warp giving you judder under braking.
