Replacement Cabriolet Hood

Hi Graeme,

Good question - it looks like the whole thing excluding the headliner, but it doesn't actually specify. I'm assuming it's the whole thing because on their index page here it shows a price of £375 + VAT for the hood in Blue or Black mohair, and a separate price of £195 + VAT for the headliner. Other sites I've seen specify the front and rear sections separately.

George & Chris, the BAS price includes VAT but not delivery, we could maybe get a reduction if we all want hoods & can get a few more from the 968 boys, what do you think?

A complete new hood isnt at the top of my list at the moment but i really could do with a new rear screen as it is very milky. (been stored folded). It may be though that its almost as expensive to replace the screen. If so I'd probably be up for it depending on the fitting cost.

Word of warning - gent around the corner from me has an S2 cab and recently changed the hood. He obviously thought "time for a change" and got a red one. The car is black, and it does not look good. [X(]

In what way does it not look good:
Is the quality poor?
Is it badly fitted?
The red coloured hood on a black car looks odd?

The red coloured hood on a black car looks odd? third time lucky [:(]

Thanks for that, for a moment I feared that we were going to be told that the BAS product was so much cheaper due to low quality standards.

Halfords used to do a really good PVC polish, but I can't find it now to replace the tube I threw away because I'd broken the top off it .[8/|]

Graeme / Chris,

Sorry for taking so long to get back - I've been up to the Lake District for a few days. Gievn the car a good run!

As for buying multiple hoods from BAS - I'm up for that - My screen has a slight split in it and is white with cracks at the top third. I've tried the OPC stuff for cleaning which has made some difference, but not enough, so overall I think a new hood is worthwhile.

I also took the car to Hartech this morning as it has a bit of a noise coming from the rear wheel. The bill won't be as bad as I feared, and they reckon that otherwise the car is in good nick so the bank balance can stretch to a hood. Phew!

George

I have a comeplete new hood to go on, my current rear hood is good, rear window replaced only 10 miles ago, completely clear. There was one small tears vertically on the top edge of the rear hood, down to the window, which I had repared at the same time as the window. They put a small inch by 1cm wide peice of mohair in and stitched it over the tear, making a new seam, then did the same in the matching place the other side. It looks totally OEM and has been perfect for 4 years!

I got your email, if I find somewhere to fit my Southbound supplied hood, I would be happy to sort you somethign out on my old rear hood. Its a DIY job to fit the rear part only, so would be a cheap quick fix!

I just need someone who can fit my new hood!!! I have heard a lot of problems can come from not readjusting the hood mechanism properly, or by tryind to fit a hood to a mech that has been messed about with adjustment wise before. I managed to get a copy of the 944 factory manual supplement for the hood mechanism. I never realised where half the adjustable points are, they aren't where you think when you look at the mech, that's for sure!

At least I am not alone in struggling to find a hood expert, Dave Nunn at Southbound is the man really, according to Porsche UK too, but his order books are overflowing (as always!!).

JZ MAchtech recommended a coulple of guys near them, I think a full hood supplied and fitted is about a grand. I may try them to see if they will fit my own one.

Last nights thunderstorms left a small puddle on the shelf behind the rear seats where the water crept in through a 10m split so its got to go.

I've taken the plunge and bought a hood from BAS International. I spoke to them about being in PCGB and asking about quantity discounts, but they just referred me to their 'Members Scheme' where you pay £99.00 membership, and get all goods at a discount.

To make that worthwhile, we'd have had to have had 10 purchasers to make any saving whatsoever, then there would have been the hassle of membership being in one person's name / address etc.

As for fitting, I'm going to a guy in Blackpool who has a good reputation - I've seen some work he's done on Ferraris and it looks good. He's done 944s in the past too.

I'll post back here when the job is done.....

I spent Saturday afternoon fitting a new hood to the MX5. I did it myself and the cost was £250 plus something to do while the whole of the rest of the country was watching football. I now don't have to zip out the back window to lower it, which had to be the single most stupid design I have ever seen on the standard one (it isn't that the window is glass, just that the plastic they use cracks in cold weather if it folds [8|]). Mine had a new back window (that cost the previous owner £190 just before I bought it [8|][8|]), but the roof was splitting above the driver's door.

The only tricky part was that it took two of us and a lot of effort to get it to close for the first time. It's started to stretch to the right size now and I managed to close it on my own just now, but better that than baggy.

I'd thought about fitting the hood myself, but I can't help thinking that it would end up coming loose while I'm ploughing down the M55.

One thing I don't need for the car is parachute assisted brakes!
