Replacement Door Speakers

Have finally had to accept that the original stereo and speakers are dead on my 86 '3.2 so have purchased a Sony head unit and Kenwood rear speakers that fit original holes. All ok.

Front speakers I had read on forum can be upgraded from 5" to 6", possibly with seperate tweeters. Unfortunately salesman I spoke to felt this was unlikely and left me concerned. Sorry to ask for repeat info but can anyone assure me that 6" speakers in front are ok? I assume if yes then its best to cut the hole larger by cutting the new circle with the extra 1" diameter towards the front of the car so as not to obstruct the window travel?

Finally any thoughts on ideal front speakers preferably with some base and not to flash in appearance as they can look out of place in my eye.

Appreciate any help
Thanks
Darren

6" fit fine - I have them in my car. I have an Alpine component set that looks suitably like standard and gives a real improvement to the overall sound quality. Cast about £150 plus fitting if I remember correctly.

Can i suggest that John Bellringer is contacted, as I recall he has improved his sound system to almost normal car acceptable levels....

I have just purchased some sony xplod 17cm units and they fit perfectly. You don't have to worry about getting custom fit ones as there is so much depth in the door panel.

Thank you all, as always the advise from the forum is better than the so called professionals!!

Any other specific comments from anyone welcome but I think I am more than comfortable now on the size issue.

Cheers

I fitted Infinity 6" component system i.e separate tweeter with no problems. Even managed to adapt the plastic shroud that sits over the speaker...couple of minutes in a moderate oven and it became easily mouldable to the slightly fatter speaker :)
Fine speakers... had the 5" ones in my Impreza for ages...recommended

Now you come to mention it, I have the Infinity set up for the fronts, but with Kenwoods in the rear, utilising the standard shelf, but sounds crap.

I thought I was going to get a decent sound, as the complete settup was recommended by Prestige.

I myself am looking to improve the sound, but am told the the accoustics in a 911 are crap anyway. I did see an article some years ago in 911 Porsche World, where £1500.00
was spent on speakers and boxes to make it 'acceptable'

Unless the rears are just woofers, there's no point in having speakers there at all. For a good quality sound all mid range and treble should come from in front of the listener any rear fill upsets the balance and the sound will not be as crisp. Try fading out the rears using the head unit and see if this improves the sound.

All i run in my Porsche is an Infinity component set in the front. My only gripe is that there could be more bass but i guess were not driving Citroen Saxos are we !!

One thing I would reccomend is sound deadening material in the door. Brown Bread is one of the best materials on the market today.

The last couple of notes already follow my brief experience, the Kenwoods in the rear do a job but cant say its exceptional. I will go for larger fronts and then fade rears and see how I go.

At the end of the day you still cant beat the flat six speaker can you? Equally, when the young stickies are in rear and Gareth Gates is playing its hardly something I want too many people to hear you undestand!

Sad!
