Replacement engines.

On checking the service history of my 98 Boxster,i see it had a replacement engine fitted by AFN in 2001 at around 21k miles.
The car has now done 101k miles.
I have driven a few early Boxsters, and the engine in mine feels the nicest!!!
Are the factory replacement engines any different to the originals?
Thanks,
Andrew.

My understanding is that they take particular care when rebuilding these engines to avoid a recurrence. They also incorporate the latest engine mods (e.g updated Intermediate Shaft bearing and nut etc.).

If the car was under the factory warrany when it failed, ie in its first 2 years, then it will have received a new engine off the production line. If it was replaced at under extended warranty (most likely given your dates) then it will have been a rebuilt engine, using a mixture of new and used parts. Any rebuilt engine will get any updated internals that can be applied at the time. In theory they should be as good, although on a dyno i've seen a rebuilt engine have a very uneven power curve beyond 6000rpm (albeit that was a 3.2S).

If the rebuilt engine has lasted this long you have nothing to worry about by now other than general wear n tear. Sounds like you have a car thats been well used and has beeded in correctly, ratehr than some of the lower mileage cars that just don't get proper use.
