Replacement for 997 PCM Head Unit

reevers

New member
Hi, has anyone replaced the original Porsche Head Unit on the 997. My car is a 2005 and the Sat Nav is really out of date!!
Would like Bluetooth phone capabilities in potential new one.
Any recommendations?

Depends on whether you've got the Bose setup or not. I ended up going the Dension route in my Cayman and retaining the original head unit to charge/play music from an iPhone lead in the centre console or music from a USB stick in the front. Works ok, as long as you're not bothered about hands-free calls.

If you don't have the Bose amp, then a headunit should be straightforward, if that's the route you want to go.

Ive gone the whole hog - replaced the head unit with a Pioneer SPH DA120. It has Apple Carplay plus radio, bluetooth music and bluetooth phone if the phone isn't cable connected (Carplay needs a wired connection). Very pleased with the outcome.

I did all the work myself, but not for the faint hearted. I had Bose in my car so had to replace the amp and removed the CD stacker (the new amp sits where the CD stacker was). I cut no wires and made no alterations to the bodywork so it is totally reversible.

Happy to provide more info

I toyed with the idea of ditching the head unit altogether (as per the Cayman R or Boxster Spyder, and fitting one of their blanking plates) but the OPC suggested that the presence of the head unit was required by the can bus system, and the car might not run without it, unless the whole thing was reset. This put me off the idea, but it does make me wonder about can bus issues in swapping the unit. Did you have to address this Richard?

No issues at all John; nothing to do.

The dash display lost the basic data it used to show replaced with -----

I had cruise retrofitted and when it was recoded by the OPC they turned off the dashes in the dash display

I put all the wiring into a new loom. Will provide pictures. Even managed to get a male/female connector that mimicked the Bose amp connection so I could plug straight into the speaker wiring.

IMO it doesn't look after market at all. Even has a Porsche logo when the unit powers up
