replacement headlamp unit - cheaper options

i have a 2002 targa and one headlamp unit is new having been replaced in a crash but the other is very scratched and discloured - it is close to an MOT fail in fact so needs replacing

i have the litronics (the standard ones require eating too many carrots)

aside from paying a ridiculous price from porsche (1700 quid) or waiting for another idiot to run into me what are my options ?

anyone breaking a rear shunt ?

I would try one of the plastic renovation kits first. They give excellent results, and although they require a fair bit of elbow grease, it is a lot cheaper than a replacement. 3M's one seems the popular choice.

i tried meguiars polish but it had little effect - the 3M kit starts with sanding with progressivly higher grades - maybe thats whats needed so may have a go but i am a bit cautious to take a sanding wheel near the car !

If you feelbthe surface you can feel its rough and raised and badically needs polishing out. The solution does idealy require some sanding with say 1500(wet is less abrasive ), second sanding with 3000 or some fine cutting compound, followed by polishing ideally with slight cutter. Your headlamp will look hazy before the polishing stage. You can do it by hand.

the MOT shop polished it up for me as otherwise it was a fail - looks great - and for no charge !

modern motors on adelaide road - just an ordinary garage but for me were helpful and honest - new tyre (also a fail due to damage) replaced at very competitive price

the 2 other MOT places near me in london have both closed down - one is now 'luxury flats' and the other soon will be

Hi, my head lights were poor also, smokey, yellowing & scratches,
it takes a brave man,
I popped the headlight out secured it on a bench,
started with a couple of sheets of 3500 grade wet & dry,
about 20 minutes later felt sick thought I would need a new one,
but beyond the point of no return,
next 500 grade polish & 5 minutes with my DA polisher,
next 2500 grade polish & a couple of minutes with my DA polisher,
finally a wipe down with a cloth & as if by magic not quite new but a fantastic improvement,
good luck
