Replacement starter?

Hi guys

My Turbo is currently in for a service and it seems to be passing with flying colours apart from a starting issue which began a frosty morning or two ago.

I turned the ignition and literally got nothing - no noises at all. I did it again about 5 times and then it started to turn over and 3rd attempt it finall started.

First time it's ever done that. I have a battery trickle charger so that should be fine.

The OPC say they think it's the starter itself that's getting stuck. Probably improve with temperature but may be dust got in there that's clogging it up.

Anyway, they are quoting over £1200 for a fitted new one (2.5 hrs). Which is just ridiculous so I am going to leave it for now - especially as I don't drive the car much during the winter.

Looking online at porscheshop, they do refurbed ones for £210 incl vat. This seems like a much better option.

Just wondering if any other 997 owners have had similar experiences they could share?

Many thanks

Alex

All about diagnosing a problem using a proper process, not chucking parts at a problem - a talent increasingly residing only in independents. Good luck.

Yes, same problem on my car (2006) which would only ever start on the 2nd try.

I thought it was normal for a year when they replaced the "battery" for a charge despite being in warranty. Problem continued into year 2 of the warranty and when they "found" the problem being the starter motor they promptly refused to rule it under their warranty. New starter yes for 1200 resolved all issues. Am kicking myself for not complaining more. Thus I recommend the independent route and the 2nd hand starter - will be cheaper by far than OPC and if all fails you know the fallback.

is the car starting normally sometimes?

I had a starting issue, read all about it here: http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/997-gt2-gt3-forum/740742-strange-starting-issue.html

since my last post in Aug 13, no problems at all.

Apparently the way to fix this issue is to check the car in for a service to replace the starter motor, then the second you do the problem will vanish (before you have the service)!!

So I have put this replacement on hold until it starts playing up again.

The day before I booked the car in, it took over 10 attempts to start the car - since then it starts first time every time - go figure!

BTW...
OPC price = £1200
Indi price = £245 for new Bosch part + £90 labor + VAT = £400

!!!!

Isn't that always the way [:)]

When I had the slow turn over with mine (only after it was warm) I had dropped it into the dealers and they found no fault!! []
As luck would have it the service rep saw me to my car and as I tried to start the car it did play up- with the service rep hearing it too.
He immediately came over and said we'll fit a new starter motor, here's the key to the loaner once again...

New motor and never played up again.
