Replacing brake hoses (1982 SC)

Hi - my mechanic mentioned that the ends of my brake hoses were showing some signs of rust and I wondered how easy it would be to replace them myself? Do I need any special tools such as a 'flare wrench' or is it better to let the professionals do it? I have had my callipers refreshed so am happy bleeding the brakes etc....

I had no problem replacing the brake hoses on my son's '79SC a year or two ago and they were in dire need of replacing!
If I recall, I didn't need any special tools.

So you should be fine.

Thanks - the brake hoses will be delivered this week and I will have a look next weekend at fitting them. Fingers crossed!

Hi I did mine last year ,and I'd just offer this advice spray everything with wd40 a few days before you start, make sure you have the correct brake pipe spanners I needed two different sizes and be prepared to use a blowtorch on any couplings that are seized, if you round a nut or snap one off your in trouble, a week after doing mine I took my other car for on mot and they snapped a brake pipe in the calipper and had to replace the calipper

I suggest you fit aeroquip (metal braded hoses) Do not under any circumstances use any heat on brake pipes. your car will have DOT 4 brake fluid this is highly inflammable. I would also recommend you change the metal pipes if you are doing the back hoses. You may end up fitting new metal pipes anyway as the nuts will often twist the pipes.

I used Goodridge hoses and second the advice on replacing the rear hard lines as very easy to twist them.
plenty of penetrating fluid as well....not sure about the heat though. Bit of a pita job but has to be done.

May be worthwhile replacing the metal retaing clips as well.

I didn't need ( or would recommend) using heat to undo the unions, just loads of WD40!

Thanks for your replies - I have not got round to doing them yet and may wait until the winter arrives! I will look into the hard lines as well and do the whole thing while in there. I need to have the front brake callipers refurbished as well so it makes sense to do the whole thing at the same time. I had thought that using heat may be risky so will try to avoid doing that. In the meantime I can just enjoy driving her.......

I replaced the brake back shields on the front as well as they were well corroded.

Back ones looked rather more complicated to replaced, so left well alone!
