Replacing CDR23, Amp and speakers (MOST BUS)

I am replacing the stereo and amplifier in my 03 996 C4S (MOST Bus) so am keen to work out exactly how the speakers are wired up to the amplifier.

I am pretty sure I have a 6 channel set up with Front Dash speakers taking up 2 channels (left and right), the Front Door speakers taking up another 2 and the rear speakers taking up the final 2 channels. Its the standard sound pack (not BOSE) that comes with the C4S.

I would like to know how to identify the pin out's on the amplifier so that I can re-use the existing wiring when replacing my amplifier. Does anyone have this information on the pin outs?

Also I am assuming that the front dash and rear speakers have crossovers somewhere for the tweeters and midrange as there will only be two wires (+ve and -ve) for each midrange and tweeter combination leading me to believe they are crossed over somewhere else and not on the amplifier. Can anyone confirm this?

My aim is to use 3 way components in the front of the car and not bother with the rear speakers (or run them directly from the head unit). I therefore need to identify 3 separate connections (tweeter, midrange and bass) for each side and connect them to my new crossover. From what I can see, the amp only sees 2 speaker connections for the front, 1 (+ve and -ve) for both the tweeter and mid and another for the bass (door speakers). I would like to avoid re wiring for the tweeters and also dont want to hit another hidden crossover point somewhere. Do the tweeters just have resistors in line or is there a crossover box hidden away somewhere?

Sorry for the long post but any help would be much appreciated.

Is it the M490 Audio Option Pack you have? Check for 490 on the option sticker. (Bose is 680). If so, I have the wiring diagrams, so drop me an email and I'll attach details to a reply.

Richard,

Its the 490 option I have (standard on the C4S without BOSE I believe). The wiring diagram for the Amp would be good, but the wiring diagram for the speakers would be of huge benefit also as I am not sure how the speakers in the dash are wired (either as a 2 way or as a true component with a crossover).

Thanks in advance

I had an interesting conversation about Sterios at Ragley.

Ok as Was explained to me

you need an amp and subwoofer I think.

Also you definately need to look at the back of the (front) doors. Sound deading required)

Makes sense as it would be like putting speakers in a cake tin.

Don't believe me ... just go out and tap the door where the speaker back would be on the outside!

Then come back and appologise! lol

The speaker wiring is shown on the diagram. Drop me an email (click the link below my avatar) and I'll attach the info to a reply. (I can't attach anything to an email generated from the forum link to your email address).

Richard - Email sent.

Aftershock - I know all about the effects of sound deadening and am one of the converted, although I confess to not having believed it until i tried it a good few years ago. I do have to say that the 996 needs it a lot more than my old '89 3.2 did, much thicker door skins back in the day. Anyway, I think thats a project for later once I have managed to bypass the MOST system. Thanks for your input though.

There's an article on renntech on speaker upgrade here:-http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=5022 .

Your headunit is connected to the amp via a fibre optic link, but if you are fitting a different headunit and amp this isn't a problem.
The only speaker wires that you really need to find are the ones to the doors, these run through the multi-block connector that you can see when you open the doors, these are a pig to rewire so use the originals. The other speakes are easier to get at if you want to use better cable.

Also a part number for blank speaker grilles.
[] Wish I had seen them before I hacked my original speakers to bits !

Thanks for all the responses guys. Have been on holiday for a couple of weeks so haven't been ignoring them. Problem now is that its got a little colder and a little darker which is curbing my enthusiasm slightly before I tackle this one [&:]
