Replacing CDR30 / CD Radio

If anyone is contemplating this; I have had a Kenwood DNX7230 DAB installed in my 987.2.

Pictures attached. I also have the Porsche splash screen logo in the correct format if anyone wants it.

Looks good, did you get the speakers upgraded as well? If not, how does the sound compare to the CDR30? Wouldn't mind doing this, but no doubt it would invalidate the warranty, as would fitting Michelin Pilot SS tyres - perhaps it's time to consider how much I want the warranty!

Hi Homerdog

No I didn't upgrade the speakers, as I figure the cost isn't justified in a soft top - it's not the best acoustic environment. I wanted the nav / Bluetooth more than anything else.

Without blasting noise at everyone within 2 miles ( I'm no longer a yoof) you can't hear music above 50mph anyway. Having moved from a TVR to Porsche, I'm used to driving without any accompaniment other than a very loud exhaust ( I had straight through pipes on the TVR)

My boxster is 3 years old, but I have the "dealer" 2 year warranty from purchase. I accept that if an electrical fault occurs they will try to blame the Kenwood; but my main worry would be major mechanical problems, and I don't see that even Porsche could get away with blaming Kenwood for a scored bore or faulty oil seal!!!!!!!!

I assume then you don't want to extend the warranty after it expires.

18 months to run, and I'll consider then. £1k + to have the 181 point check done and extend for a year. MAybe cheaper to do an after market warranty - or not bother.

I assume you know Porsche will only "pass" a car for warranty if it is completely Porsche, i.e. not aftermarket parts.

However, I'd be really interested if they did pass your car, as I'd like to change my standard CDR24 for a better after market one.

Yes I do know. It would cost me around £150 to have the CDR30 reinstalled for the "test", then changed back again. Plus cira £1.2k for the test and warranty. Probably not worth the hassle, as it is my intention to only keep it a further year after the existing warranty expires, then upgrade to a 981.

Porsche are really out of line with the rest of the market on their warranty attitude. For instance - my wife's Merc didn't have "command" sat nav etc when she bought it as a demonstrator. When I asked the dealer about fitting the system, he said that they don't do it, but passed me to a company called Braybrooks, who fit Merc parts as an after market installation. Didn't affect the warranty at all, and renewed each year by the Merc dealer without a problem although their computer system doesn't show the car as having the command system.

can i ask how much and who did it Paul. I have a 2007 987. It fits in nicely. Does it accommodate ipod connectivity?

Hi Peter

John Kleis, Kenwood dealer in Reading. £950 for unit plus circa £250 for GPS /dab aerial, cage fitting etc.
Has Ipod connectivity via usb connector, and control from the head unit touch screen - I had my usb fitted in the bin under the armrest, but you could also have it in the glove box. The unit also takes a 32gb SD card for MP3 music.

If you are anywhere near me (West Oxfordshire) you are welcome to take a look.

Cheers
Paul

Thanks Paul. Up in the north west but next time I am nearby. Sounds a good set up. Perhaps somewhere in Manchester does similiar
