Replacing PCM/SatNav

I understand that PCM1 is no longer supported by Porsche in terms of updated CD's. Can the in-dash 2xDin module be replaced with an aftermarket modern Satnav/DVD LCD display & head unit?

Are you sure that PCM1 is not being supported with updated software? If it isn't then anyone with PCM1 should feel thoroughly aggrieved with Porsche.

If PCM1 uses a Becker CD system, then it may be worth enquiring to see if Becker can provide updated CDs. Becker. of course, do the 'Traffic-pro hi speed' system.

PCM2 cannot be retro-fitted to a pre-2003 car as it uses optical connections.

The other option is Smart Nav. This has no visible hardware. Do a search for more info.

Have you tried posting a message over on www.pocketgps.co.uk ?

They have an "in-car manufacturer" forum. There is a huge user base there - someone will probably be able to help.

The PCM 1 is still supported by Porsche - in theory.....

They still supply the update disk but the most current version in 2001-2002 (at least 2 years old!) and they are in stock at around £250.

I do begrudge paying so much for something that will enevitably be wrong and out of date at times....

The disks were originally supplied by Navtech I believe but all they do now is supply the data for Porsche to package and sell......

Becker supplied radios under a Porsche badge but not a SatNav version that I am aware of. I have just sold my 964 and still have the Becker 4720 with a brand new 2004 disk that may be available if anyone is interested, my 996 has a PCM 1 in it and the becker update disks DO NOT work in the PCM unit.

An OPC said I should contact reading who may be aware of a newer disk be launched.

The disk I have for the PCM 1 is 1999 so I am looking for something newer (copy/new/used etc.)...

Just spoken to Porsche and the latest disk is 2001-2002 and nothing newer for PCM 1 or 2. He said I should contact NavTech but I have told them they they dont supply them any more.

They are going to look into it and get back to me.

There certainly was a SINGLE DIN SLOT Satnav Becker-made but Porsche-Badged one.

Not the PCM1 - just a straight upgrade unit over the normal CDR-22 radio/cd.

Does anyone know if this uses tha same discs?

You can see the Becker units here - maybe they can advise on the availability of upgrade discs?

Spoke to Becker this morning. They will not supply disks for the PCM1, they are actually only available from OPC, as the PCM is an OEM design.

However, if one wanted to change to an aftermarket kit - Full SatNav with CD/DVD & TV with coulour screen that replaces the 2xDin PCM module can be fitted. Porsche supply a facia panel to fit a 6.5" LCD screen !! Total cost approx £2500
