Replacing window seals

My car appears to have had some paintwork done on the rear wing in the past, and there is bit of paint on the leading edge of the window seals where they butt onto the paint. It is annoying me as it looks a bit tatty where it picks up wax etc, and I would like to replace them.

This would include the rear quarter window seal, the rear screen seal, the rubber gasket along the roof (where the roof-rack mounts are) probably the passenger window seal too, ie. the one on top of the door.

Is this a nightmare job, or just a matter or whipping them out and glueing new ones in?

Alternatively, any top tips for removing the paint from the seals, but not the car?

Thanks,

Robert.

It is all do-able, but time consuming.

The rear screen surround rubber just pulls out. The rear side window is bolted in place - remove the B pillar trim and unbolt. The window seal includes the front window seal - it goes all the way around the opening, and is pop-rivetted in place (there is a metal strip in the seal). You would have to drill them out and pop-rivet the new seal on. To remove the door window seal strip, you have to take off the front guide for the window, and it then the strip pulls off.

It would be a delicate operation trying to get the paint off the rubber. Cellulose thinner might do it. If it was me, I would try lightly dampening the tip of a cloth wrapped around my finger, and work it lightly over the rubber to try and soften the overspray and remove it. You should mask the paintwork, trying to get the masking tape under the edge of the rubber, but be careful that you don't apply enough thinner for it to seep under the masking tape. It's a long time since I've done anything like that, but that's what I would try first. Having said all that, maybe a post on the Concours forum might get some other suggestions.

Thanks Richard, I did try some very fine wet n'dry which did work, but very fiddly, and cant be done on the roof seal.

I'll see what Tony Wright quotes for the work!
