Replica 911

I am currently the owner of an '03 Boxster S. I'm very please with the car but I feel an urge to trade up (once my coffers are of sufficient size). I can see myself going one of two ways - new (997S or 996GT3) or old. Asfar as the old stuff is concerned I quite like the idea of a modern 911 replica. There seem to be a number of companies in the replica field (Autofarm, 911 Classic and Paul Stephens) and they look pretty good.
What's the general opinion of these replicas - apologies for being a double blasphemer and mentioning Boxster and replica in this forum! Treat me gently.

These are not 911 'replicas' (Covin make 911 'replicas'), they are genuine 911s that have been modified to 'recreate' or 'replicate' a specific model or theme.

The idea is to have the traditional, classic, 'look' with the benefits of modern engineering (galvanizing, more powerful engines, better gearboxes, brakes etc).

Personally, I'm not convinced. I've yet to see a really well executed example. IMO original is best. I would rather have a practical modern Porsche and a genuine, original, 'classic' 911.

The contemporary cars (Boxster/Cayman, 996/997) are superb, but don't under-estimate the pleasure that the earlier cars can provide - the best examples are fantastically rewarding to thread down good fast A and B roads.

As Oliver points out - the 'replicas' from AutoFarm and PS are replicas of specific models - 2.7RS etc.

My ONE observation about these is, while they are priced at £50k to £60k - and are cheap (ish) in comparison to a genuine RS - they are MORE money than an equivilent genuine 2.4S - which is 8/10ths of the 2.7RS (if you get a GOOD one) in real terms.

A 2.4S from 1973 is only going up in value - a replica will always be a replica - so my advice - take the ammount you would have spent on a replica and buy a really good - properly restored genuine S and you'll have a great fun car that, if cared for properly, should only go north in value.......

......something a 996 or 997 will never do.

The one's I've seem also haven't been 100% . . . . and boy they're expensive. I'd go with pmjt's advice and get yourself a descent early car . . . although say you send £40K on a top condition 2.4S, it's the 'caring for in properly' that might put you off. At least with a galzanised shell, you don't have to worry so much about getting it wet etc.
