Required - LCD dashboard clock for 968 Sport

Can anyone lay their hands on a LCD dashboard clock for a 1994 968 Sport? The original Porsche part is/was £250 though no longer available! I think I am grateful for that fact but now need to find elsewhere. Any guidance would be appreciated.

This is very common with 944s (same part) as they seem to fail through age. Good used ones seem to fetch over £100 regularly.

Bear in mind that the used one is likely to be near to failing, as it's probably older than yours. So, it's worth considering going for the new one as that's going to be a twenty-plus years solution. You'll have to be very careful with the dash trims, they get brittle with age. [&o]

See the 944 faqs forum for a novel solution, using a more modern clock.

I just bought a tested one from Porscheapart 90 quid delivered,at least you have some form of come back if it does not work?

That reminds me. If you're changing your clock put a new bulb in. A few pennies, but at least you won't have to take it apart again for a while. [8|]

Didn't realise they'd be so expensive!

I didn't even realise there was a bulb for the clock, until it was brought up on another forum (the bulb had already blown when I bought the car)

Anyway, I ended up replacing it with a blue LED, as that's all I had lying around when I took the original bulb out:

Works quite well and will hopefully last a bit longer than a conventional bulb...

Two points;

1) I ordered a clock for a 968 and NOT a 968 Sport and the part is different (Doh!). The 968 Sport clock has the lap timer configuration whilst it the regular 968 clock has the temperature configuration. So back to Porsch-Apart but I'm guessing the Sports clock is rarer than the regular one.

2) I didn't know about the light either. Thanks for that. I think blue LED works well. Is that a Maplin sourced part ?

If anyone knows the location of the 968 Sports clocks, let me know !

Oooh, even more complicated than the 944, which at least all had the same clock!

Ours have the lap timing facility, I'd guess that's the same part so would be interchangeable. Although, as I've said, age seems to kill the clocks so newer might be better. I didn't know the 968 had a temp display, I'd choose that if buying a new one for the 944.

I've suggested in the past that it might be the heat from the bulb that affects the LCD display. Would the LED run colder? That could help longevity, and looks much nicer. Particularly with the LED dash lighting kits so many of the 944s have as the dash lighting also fails with age. [&o]

Not from Maplin's, no.

To turn it into an LED, I had some Blue 509t LED dash bulbs lying about. These come in their own little holders. The clock light is very similar, but there's a few little differences in the design of the holder, which meant I had to take the LED out of its holder and (very carefully) chop off a couple of bits of metal, for it to fit properly into the original bulb holder.

Oh yes, and with regards to the original bulb heating up the LCD, I'm not sure. There is a few centimetres between the bulb and the LCD display and it is only a tiny little bulb. Saying that though, maybe Porsche had the bulb designed a few centimetres away from the LCD, to stop too much heat transferring to the LCD?

I guess on long runs, it may start to get hot and the bulb is always on when the car is running. Could be something. LEDs produce very little heat and consume less energy, and have supposed to last longer, so I guess fitting one to the clock may be a win-win situation.
