respray advise

Any comments around resprays please.
My 87 3.2 paintwork (flat black) is original round front and doors and has had rear resray some years ago I think. Overall its fairly reasonable with a good polish etc but now has a fair spattering of stone chips and minor marks etc and my critical eye cant stop seeing them ! (Even if no one else seems too ! Guess you know what I mean)

Trouble is in honesty I cant justify a high cost bare metal job.

What sort of results have been achieved with 'standard' resprays and what sort of costs are involved. I am in JZ Machtech territory so any recomendations on bodyshops would be interesting as well.

If you think I should leave it and accept the cars age rather than perhaps half doing the job I would appreciate an honest opinion. For the record, the car is mechanically excellent having had loads of work done by JZ, the car has also been used for a magazine feature recently.

Appreciate your thoughts, cheers
Darren

Hi Darren, you don't say which area you come from. If you are in Region 10 or close by then can suggest 2 very good paint shops - one in the Milton Keynes area, the other near Rushden in Northants. Let us know where you are.

Cheers

Darren,

I saw your car featured in 911 & Porsche World and I took a look at it when you came along to our region's sports car day at Pulloxhill. Nice car and it didn't look to me like it was crying out for a front end respray, so my advice would be to just polish it and enjoy.
However I believe that JZMachtec have a recommended bodyshop in the Kings Langley area. You should call them.

Brian.

There is an excellent bodyshop in Wembley called "911 Bodyshop". The guy to talk to is called Crispin, he has previously done work for me and it has been excellent and reasonably priced. He does the full range of work from minor repairs to full restorations.

Give him a call (020 89000572) and see what he says - he will also give you anhonest opinion as to whether he thinks you should respray or leave alone.

Regards

Thanks gents,
I will call above, if they are the sort of people to give honest view then that may fall in line with Brian's comments above as well, ie maybe I am just being too fussy (is that possible when you own a Porsche?)

If anyone has any cost examples of work they have had done that would be interesting.

Cheers
Darren

Hi

I believe that JZM use Langley Autocraft as their preferred bodyshop. My brother recently had a front half respray (bonnet, both front wings, valence) on his black 3.2 (1985) and it cost £1,200 although this did include repair work to a sizeable dent (about the size of a fist) in the front near side wing after a large branch was blown onto it.

Hope this helps

Richard

Hi Darren

I too have an 87 black 3.2 - the devil to keep clean! 2 years ago I had the engine cover, front bumper, mirrors and bonnet repaired and painted at Langley Autocraft for £1000 - they did a superb job.

I can recommend 911 bodyshop, opposite JAZ in Wembley, did a good job on mine and had many a good word said about them, but not cheap!

Thanks gents
I have now got details on 911 Bodyshop and Langley Autocraft so will do the rounds asap and get quotes. Be good to atleast tidy the front up which as always gets peppered.
Cheers

Hi Darren,I once had a black car too and know how you feel about the stonechips (everyone else thinks your being fussy but your the one who cleans it!!)I`ve had a couple of cars painted in the past (although not Porsches)and if you decide to get the whole car done you could probably reduce the cost if you strip down the car prior to taking it to the body shop.
If you decide on the bare metal route make sure the people you take it to don`t take the galvanising off too!!I`ve read articals where this has been done with dire results in later years!

Dave, could you send me details of these two bodyshops in R10. I am going to have a front end touch up before winter and I have also just discovered the first tiny pinpricks of corrrosion [] on one of my rear wings which I want addressed asap.

I was very badly burned by a Northampton bodyshop a few years ago so I want to use one that comes recommended, knows how to treat corrosion properly, and is able to match 15 year old paint

Hi Darren
I can thoroughly recommend "The Cambridge Car Centre Bodyshop" Tel;01223 870022.They did my o/s wing, door, rear 1/4 and n/s rear 1/4 plus front and rear bumpers and rear valance sections for £1250.To me the job was A+concours. They have lots of experience with the Porsche marques too.
Good luck in your search.

Does anyone know Dtunnicliffe or have his email address? He's not enabled his email through the forum and I'd like to try these two bodyshops he mentions but have no way of contacting him?
