Retro fit aircon

My C4 has no air con. Never been a problem, sunroof and the fan do the trick and besides it saves 25kg in weight - a bag of cement!
I believe the ac also drains 10 to 15bhp and would be on the point of collapse on a 9 year old car by now? BUT, with summer around the corner, [8D] It would occasionally be nice in a long traffic jam. The question: Has anyone any experience of an ac retro-fit as regards possibilty, quality and price?
Cheers

i had my 993 done by Reader Air in Woking.

Not cheap, but it is a fantastic job. it is manual air conditioning tho', not climate (!)

Ignoring costs, it is well worth it... if you intend keeping your 993 for some time. i have had the aircon 2 yrs (2 summers) and it is a much nicer drive down to Le Mans for example!

If you go ahead it must be with someone who has done many 993's. So much has to be dismantled that it will sound like a bag of spanners if put back together badly.

Hi JP,

I'm thinking of having the same done on my 993

One question - did you have to buy a new display unit (second hand) that has the a/c button which isn't present on mine? There's one for sale on E-Bay right now

Thanks a lot

My car does not have an option code for AirCon, but it has AirCon (well, it gets cold if a press the snow-flake button[8|])
So was AirCon standard on C16 cars?

Hi ,

In response to Iona, Reader Air put a "backlit" snowflake button just above the heater, so i have manual air con.

In response to John Maddox, i personally have NO reason to recommend Reader Air in Woking, except for 2 things. The system works, and JZ Machtech were so impressed by the installation.

In fact when my car went in for its annual check, they asked me for the installer's details to pass on to another 993 customer who was thinking about getting this done. I looked around for about 2 yrs before taking the plunge and having the work done, as it is not cheap. JZMachtech at that time advised me not to bother, as they had never seen a decent retro-job.

Would second talking to Noel at Coolit. He is a through and through Porscheaholic and has done a lot of things to a lot of Porsches (including LHD to RHD conversions).

He also has access to a lot of parts and would be a good guy to talk to regarding a potential retro install of the factory option....

Just to reiterate what Tim said on the last post. Neol at Cool It is well worth speaking to. It wont be cheap because he will only use Porsche parts but the job will be 100%.

I'm very curious too. Was this the standard AirCon stuff from Porsche or any sort of upgraded or aftermarket package.

My AirCon worked for about 3 months when I got the car, now it's toast and it had recently been regassed before I got it so I don't want to waste money on doing that again.

I've seen quite a few posts about misidentification of problems with the aircon and expense with replacing tubes and condensers, etc. and was just wondering if anyone offered a completely different package that worked better - what with advances in technology over the past 10+ years, etc.

I'm curious - what did the retro cost?

A good shop will evacuate the system and confirm it can hold a vacuum before refilling it. They'll also put a leak detecting dye in. They will also need to refill the system by weight or Porsche's pressure graph; the 993 AC system runs slightly lower pressures that many cars and using "standard" pressures to get the fill right means the system won't be operating at maximum efficiency.
