Retro fit roof opening

T200

New member
I have been told that there is a retro fit to enable my boxter to open and close it's roof while moving at less than 30mph. Any ideas on prices and where to buy such a device. Have looked online and there is a relay for sale which they say does the job, which they claim is plug and play. It is onsale stateside

Any advice ????

Chris

You're probably thinking of the SmartTOP. Chuffin expensive for what is essentially a relay. They sometimes come up on eBay, but generally for not much less than new. There's also a bodge where you bend back a pin on the existing relay - but I wouldn't personally do that!

Here's a link to porscheshop.co.uk. They have the Smart Top for £235.00

By all accounts, it does the job. However, I'm not sure that the 986 hood was ever designed to be opened and closed on the move, which is bound to put more load on the mechanism than doing it whilst parked.

Waste of money - just bend pin 18 in the original relay over. That's it.

It's not "one touch" and you do have to pull the handbrake to the first notch (where it has no effect) but that's all you need to do.

Bear in mind that the roofs of boxsters prior to the facelift are NOT designed to be operated at ANY speed - I have heard from one owner whose roof mechanism was damaged by opening it at too high a speed (and I don't mean above 30!). (As I now see has been mentioned above as well!)
It's handy to be able to do it at the traffic lights etc but not whilst underway.

Also if you have the plastic rear screen you won't be getting out to fold it correctly - so only really any use for raising the roof back up.

Save your money Chris you still have to give it the Boxster chop when opening it up...anyway it is only for old posers like me in Yellow cars showing off at traffic lights putting up and down the roof [:D]

Thanks guys, I saw the wrightune website but thought I would ask the experts on here their thoughts, I would only use it for putting it back up when the rain got too much. Brian I can put it up at lights but they have to be at red first lol. Think I will leave it be as you say Mark it has the plastic screen and hopping to get a few more years out of it.

Anyway we are off to Germany in the morning and I will be hoping to fit in a wee visit to the Posche Factory I have told Susan that there is great shopping in Stuttgart [;)]

Thanks for the advice yet again

Chris
