I fitted this Pioneer because It matched the interior.
I have a modern expensive Kenwood player in my motorhome, sounds fantastic with its 350W speakers but was just not right in the 944.
I bought it for the looks knowing the sound would be "OK" from a Pioneer.
I did not want to change the speakers and wired it through the fader on the console.
Although not as loud or responsive as the Kenwood I was very surprised how close it was.
The build quality is much better than the Kenwood and it is much easier to use.
Dont be fooled by the looks, it has all the features (but I dont think I will use the dual sound TV in the back mode).

Was £400 (ripp off) now reduced to £300 in Halfords.

I got mine on the net for just over £200 .....EXCELLENT

I highly recommend it, Only fault is the Faceoff is too big.........Put it in your pocket and you will get more looks than the car!

Mike

Go ahead Fen you know you want to.

Looks good. I already have a separate Pioneer DAB tuner, so I have to buy Pioneer to to be able to use that and that model is far and away the best looking.

Trouble is I have other things to spend my cash on just now like insurance (got my renewal today and the cost didn't change at all from last year - gotta love Liverpool Victoria), a belt service, a turbo engine and a dented wing. Maybe for Christmas then...

Hiya Mate , looks good I must admit, I have a cheap CD in mine at the moment and I want a decent stereo but dont want to spoil the overall appearance of the car so Im keeping my eye out , think a new set of speakers may be required but have been informed by the local radio place that it is a problem on a 944 ? carnt see that being the case but oh well.

cool, headunit, I was looking at fitting exactly the same in mine, I have currently got one of the original 88' pioneer nasties, well it melted the terminal on the back a few weeks back! It is hard to try and get one that fits with the interior, I'm not too keen on mixing the old and new stuff, unless you go mental try to turn the cockpit into that of a space shuttle and call it the turbot that is!

Unfortunately I have no entertainment (other than the right pedal), and the cross drilled brakes and pads have emptied my piggy bank for a bit. Where did you pick up your head unit on the net?

What's the DAB reception like ? I know it's meant to be good (fade free/digital etc.), but DAB has been going for 10 years now, with very little uptake of receivers, so not sure if the coverage is any good.

So ?

That's the nice thing about my Blaupunkt - the security is just a credit card sized piece of plastic, with all the settings stored on it (great for battery disconnection)

I also have a Blaupunkt DAB 52 which I use in my cab just now.

DAB coverage is pretty good nowadays, much improved over 3 years ago when I first bought the Pioneer tuner. Even in Devon we get a pretty good selection.

Quality is noticeably better than FM with no background hiss or pops and it is often less compressed so sounds more open, but you do still get drop-out in places and it can make some horrific noises when this happens. Obviously there is also a much, much wider choice of stations which means you can expect to listen to the type of music you want to hear. Talk radio is much better too (I lister to Radio 4 a lot now), and Am-only stations like Virgin and 5 Live are available pretty much nationally in crystal-clear stereo.

Bottom line is that I wouldn't be without it nowadays.

Just booked my car in for replacement Stereo and front speakers ( leaving the original casing ) just changing all the internals, wanted something to try and keep the appearance so have gone for a JVC MP3 Player ( sad but the display is Red hey and the car is Red !! ) with upgraded speakers , cost including fitting is £400 but working in the Trade we use the Radio Place quite a bit so its setting me back about £270 which sounds reasonable .

Anyway will help drown out the various noises from the brakes etc [:D]

Just picked up the car from Car Radio in Preston - cheers guys, went eventually for the JVC MP3 with DAB etc just got to get the digital camera etc so I can download stuff onto the unit, really suits the car and sounds a dam sight better than the old Panasonic, the drivers side rear speaker however is causing them a few problems, they need to get to it but think the back window will have to come out so they can get at the trim and have a look as to what is causing the problem

Anway nice sounds at last. [:D] And £316.35 lighter in the pocket

I've got DAB in the 944S. I had to modify the standard Porsche aerial amplifier to get it work properly with DAB.

As Fen says, quality's much better, especially without as much compression. My main stations are Radio 4 and Radio 7.

Rick, what did you do to the amp then mate?
I'm tempted to go for DAB, so'd be interested to know the twaeks.
