Retro Restorer (Porsche restorer) Review

New member
I though i will write a long due review about Retro Restorer. I am sure most of us have come across these guys..
Now, before i start, i am not against him or any business ideas like his which i think should come up.
This is my experience i am sharing, which i hope will help any fellow club member or any body searching internet to make a wise decision.

I picked up an S2 last year, which needed some body work. Brilliant history, 140,000 miles and a great ex-owner!

As a newbie (before asking here!), found this place over internet. Gave them a call, i have been told to speak to Nash Hunter. He runs another software business or so and Retro restorer was like a hobby.
So spoke to him, sounded friendly and enthusiast about 924's, 924 GT's 944's, 944 Turbos etc..Fixed a date and poped down with the car.

It is a small unit in an industrial estate in Banbury which didn't put me off, as he had few 924's and 944's parked outside. So i thought, OK! nice place to be..There are some fellow Porsche's

He started looking at the car with his painter and quoted what all works need doing. After an hours of talking i decided to do both the sills and a full respray. Now the paint work was done by Neil who owns another company N& J Body work, who is neighbour to Retrorestorer.
I decided to drop the car in a week's time, as i was going on an official trip outside U.K. So the idea was when i am back in few weeks, car will be ready for me..[;)].

That was the plan..but...when i checked after a week in to my trip, they said, it was more work than they expected, so it is twice the amount quoted to me... Surprise.!

During my conversation with Neil the painter, he conveyed Nash's cheeky offer to buy my car of me for £1000 (best offer[&o])
I said do not touch the car until i see the car and i will decide what to do next. I came back and negotiated the price to a ''reasonable'' amount.. So i realised the new amount was a blown up figure.
With the talks i was having with Neil and Nash, i though of taking the car back.
I have my painter next to my house, but unluckily, his body worker went on sabbatical.. [:(]
So was stuck with him to get the work done..

Over weeks, i was visiting him, the metal work was decent. But when it came to painting, oh boy, i could have painted better with rattle cans..!
When i checked and complained to Nash, he said it is nothing to do with him or retro restorer, as it is the painters responsibility..!
Great support there.!

Anyways, i said the painter, i won't take the car with $hIT paint job.
During these period i learned his compressor was not powerful enough to give a good paint job plus he never had a proper paint booth[:(]. My Bad.

I had to raise my voice, and he agreed to re spray the car in another garage done by a 'proper' painter. That didn't happen easy...

After 4 weeks he said, got a brand new compressor & Gun and he got the other painter (i think his name was Geoff) to paint my car. I went down to meet the new painter and he pointed out the faults and suggester a full respray.

So it took 4 months in total for all the job. Of course i wasn't happy with the final job. So gave it back to my painter to correct his mistakes and now a happy man with my S2. But to get where i am now, i had to pay almost two painters 4.5 months of grief.
I would trust Neil the painter more as he admitted his mistake had the sense to offer me a respray with in his capabilities. But never the guy Nash.. In my opinion, he is here for Porsche restorer 'fame' (as he did put details of my car in his website to attract people which I made him remove) and pure business.

So choose these guys wisely.. May be they have some strong points.. But i haven't seen anything other than enthusiastic talks and good business mind..They might be cheap in price compared to others. if that attract you, then expect less quality work...

Hope it helps..and enjoy your Porsche.[:)]

I feel your pain! I have had mine back for a short while now after an accident. The body shop, one I and my family have used consistently over the last ten years (they even painted my front bumper a week before the accident) Let me down big time, even running the car with no coolant in it over several months and returned it to me with a hole in the radiator.

As I elected to use my own repairer my insurance company has washed their hands of the problem and its down to me to fight with the body shop as I have found on their initial inspection (where they missed the damaged radiator) they did not list the damaged oil cooler even though they repaired the batwing which was broken directly below it.

This was their idea of a repair, that in itself is a damm cheek as I believe the have charged the insurance company for a replacement part. The stain around the repair is from the weeping damaged oil cooler.

I'm glad you have got it sorted now, make sure you drive it plenty to top up your grin factor [:D]

Hi Kannan,

Just spotted your review.

I am sorry you felt you had a bad experience with us here at Retro Restorer and I would like to respond to your comments.

When you called regarding your bodywork to your 944 S2 I explained that I was unable to complete the work, as at the time I did not have the facilities to complete spray work. I explained there was a company very close to me that had completed a few smaller jobs for us before and I pointed you in the direction of Neil at N&J Body work. He has never been employed by Retro Restorer. I made the introduction and made clear that you would be working with Neil and his company N&J Body Work. At no point did myself or my own technicians work on your car. I did on a few occasions work as a go between as you had trouble contacting Neil.

Your car was put up on my website because you wanted to see the progress of the work being carried out by Neil at N&J Body work, as they did not have a website at the time and you requested picture updates from him. As it became clear the relationship with Neil was breaking down I removed the pictures of your car. I did not make an offer to Neil for your car at any time.

I have learnt from this and once again I am sorry you had a bad experience, reflecting back I could have communicated a little differently but your contract of work was with N&J Body Work not Retro Restorer. I did not receive any payment from yourself or Neil as I was not completing any work to your car, I was just trying to point you in the right direction.

Moving forward I now only use services that have a long and well reviewed history but please accept my apology.

Dear John,

Thank you for your question, I don't know, I would assume it is N&J Body Work as I did not have any involvement in the work carried out.

Thanks

You did nothing but mess me about Nash and you blocked my friend on Twitter after he tried to contact you - after you told him that you could, again, supply the parts!

As a result of your stalling and general dicking about and otherwise unprofessional behaviour the work on my car has been delayed more than half a year (much more, in fact). I had been reluctant to mention this on forums or FB (I have griped a little, but that is all), but having read the above I will be repeating my opinion a little more freely now.

I feel though, that your ridiculously lame replies in this thread, and your inability to take responsibility for the issues raised, will serve as a warning to anyone considering dealing with you, far more than anything that I could say.

Clown.

Thanks Scott [944 Scott]. Yes i am 'exploring' A roads [:)]

Back to Retro restorer.

Nash i guess you have got a good feedback from at least few of us.
Hope you take it in a healthy positive way..

Regarding your offer for my car:
When i visited the paint shop after my office trip you were there too. I did mention to you about 'your cheeky offer'. Your comment was 'Well, any thing to help you'..!

I do remember all of the conversations we had, including the emails exchanges regarding the paint code and painting the wheels etc

Dear All,
I am sure we all will cross our roads in our Porsches, please keep updating feedback about different business (good and bad). It will be a good gauge for any one thinking of using them.

I was a little late in giving review, mainly due to my hectic work schedule. But one of my work colleague had similar issue as me (but different business!) on his Mini. So i felt a bit guilty not giving my review.
Hence what you see above.

Have a good weekend dear all. Enjoy your Porsche..[:)]

Hi All...

Sorry to hear of your woes Kannan...I've had no dealings with the company's involved so can't add anything but will say that a company that I do recommend for paintwork and restoration is 911 bodyshop in Wembley North London. I have always had first class service from them and will be visiting them again soon for a little TLC for my own car.

Regards

Pete

Gents this is an open forum (one of many I've frequented over the years) I feel that both the horror stories should equally be backed up those that go perfectly to plan and customers expectations.

I'll make it brief;

I bought a clapped out 86 Turbo blind of EBay and after Andy at Promax had tinkersed with her it became apparent the rusting sills and floor would need attention before any attempt at an MOT was tired. I saw Retro Restorers website as they'd just done similar sill work which was documented on their website. The metal work and paint work has been completed perfectly. The new clutch and additional engine work again has been carried out in a very high standard. I picked the car up last Friday and have no complaints at all.

I just think a good experience is worth sharing.

Ian

Hi all,

Just checked in and surprised this hasn't been closed down by the moderators? There is a clear "no name and shame" rule on this site, as on every other responsible forum.

The main reason for this is there's no right to reply if the company in question isn't a user of the forum, and that leaves the forum owners open to liability. Clearly that's not an issue here as there is an equal discussion, but it's still not acceptable within the forum rules so locked, and please read the forum rules before posting.

If there is an issue with a supplier why not talk to the Region or Register representative? We recommend based on feedback, and work with suppliers to help when there's a problem. That's what car clubs do behind the scenes for their members!
