Retrofit Trip Computer to a 996 C4 Tiptronic

Shalom,

I have just bought my first Porsche, a 996 C4 Tiptronic (Year 2000 model). I have all of the toys fitted I want bar one, a trip computer.

Does anyone know if it is possible to 'retro-fit' the necessary bits and make it work? I assume I will need a thermistor (temp sender), the stalk/switch for the steering column, and maybe a black box , and the associated wiring harness' to make it all work. I also assume that any black boxes required will need coding to the car?

Anyone any ideas.

Thanks, Grimbleweed

Have a search on Renntech.org This is covered in a couple of threads. All you need is a three stalk and some wires.
Oh yes, and the console enabled at a dealer, or someone with a PST2

Shalom Grimble, or should I address you as Mr Weed?

Have a look at http://www.wrightune.co.uk/ - I understand that these peolpe ave very good although I have never used them. I expect that someone on this forum knows maore about them than I do.

Good luck and enjoy the car.

Salam ali komb folks,

Many thanks to you guys for your responses. I called my local OPC (Nottingham) and was given a flat no, computer can't be retrofitted, as usual there is always a way. The light in the tunnel has been switched back on. . . . . .

Once again thanks.

Marsalama, Grimbleweed

I have been doing the retrofit for about 6 years on the local Boxsters. Same as a 996. Done about 50 cars, with the stalk or the switch.

In the US owners have the same problem you have experienced. A dealer will say it cannot be done, because they have never done it before. It is not in the Porsche manuals. Porsche does not publish instructions. In short, Porsche does not recognize this "hack" and so 99% of the dealers are in the dark. Plus it is not something you would typically expect a dealer to do. A dealer fixes and services cars, not retrofit optional equipment that the car did not come with.

For the time being find an indi and at least have the outside temp display turned on if it is not already on. There are UK people who have done the retrofit if you want to go to the next step.
