Return after a long lay up!

I have just (end of April) got my 1990 C4 back on the road after being SORN'd and left in my garage for the last 3.5 years.

I am amazed as all it needed to pass the MOT was new discs and pads all round (and this wasn't a shock as they were screwed when I put it in the garage as SORN) and the headlight beams adjusting (kids and screwdrivers!).

Insurance - £261 for 3000 miles

I have since done 400 miles without any issues and can't figure out why I had left it languishing for so long. My kids (7,5 and 3) think it's great when I take them to school (2 or 3 times a week).

I can't say it hasn't suffered from the garage - My youngest has turned his hand to bodywork repairs with a hoover plug and a broom and so the paint work is scratched and chipped in places. I also had to pay for a new rear wiper arm - courtesy of an entanglement in the car cover causing it to snap. There are also some areas of rust appearing - around the windscreen, where the front bumper joins the wings and on the passenger door shut but it still cleans up nicely and goes like stink (and is a little stinky from the oil leaking from just about every known trouble spot for a 964 engine).

It just gives me a excuse to get it up to a decent standard (may take a while!) before moving it on.

In my ownership (8 years) I have already replaced the engine tinware, clutch, dampers and springs and now all the discs and pads.

So I just have the bodywork to do, interior tidy, stereo (original speaker diaphragms are knackered), refurb on the original CUP 1's I have in the garage and engine out for a rebuild/leak sort out.

I hope to get my finger out and get to some of my regional club meets (East Midlands) soon.

Oh and some pictures when I get to it...............

Hi Chris
What a good story !!
I got mine out of the garage a couple of weeks ago (964 C2) after 9 months SORN/storage.
It started (battery connected to a charger during the winter), it drove nicely - no issues at all.
To the point that I question myself whether it needs a service or not ;-)
Great - beautiful cars . Enjoy it as much as you can
Nick

Nice one Chris.
Great to read that the 964 is back on the road having been asleep for over 3 years.

Nice one Chris. There's a load of us in 964s at Donington for a trackday on Sunday 4th August. That would make a nice excuse to give it a run out (there's no charge to go to the track to watch). [:)]
