Return to idle not quite right and possible related stuff

Morning all, as per the title really. Over the last week or so, I've noticed:

a) when the engine is revving above 2k, if I dip the clutch the revs drop and it over shoots the 700rpm idle by 100rpm or so, then comes back up to just over, then settles.
b) it does similar when it starts from cold - as it catches it goes up to 1100rpm, then back down a couple of hundred, then back, and finally settles after about 4 or 5 cycles over 10s or so
b) I've also noticed that the car seems to run a bit hesitantly below about 2k rpm, it might do it above but if it is it's slight/I might imagining it/there's more inertia in the engine so it's not as noticeable.
c) fuel consumption seems a tad high, I'm struggling to get more than 22mpg at a 75mph motorway cruise

The car is still completely drivable but since I'm taking it to have a new exhaust fitted tomorrow I'll get them to take a look....anyone got any ideas what it could be in advance? Are they all related?

I had a similar problem a few years ago and thought it might be the idle stabiliser valve (ISV) which I cleaned out - made no difference. Finally found the problem was due to a clogged up air filter! Apparently there is a pipe from the bellhousing into the airfilter box and, as a result, muck can get sucked into the filter (in my case the clutch was pretty worn). So worth checking the state of your airfilter.

Kind regards
Anton

Good it was a simple / quick fix.

Out of curiosity, what mpg do you now get at a 75mph motorway cruise?

Thanks in advance.

I don't know yet as I have my other car out this weekend, but, on the journey across town to Jaz for the fix, I got 11.5mpg, on the way back after the fix (admittedly in slightly better traffic) I got over 17mpg!! I'm hoping to nudge 30mpg on a steady mway cruise based on that :)

I used to get about 31 - 32mpg out of C2 varioram on the really long runs, the tt can manage 27 - 28 at that speed, but it is taller geared than the C2.

Neat, 50% improvement. Doubtless be the same on the motorway result too.
