Return Visit to The Great Engines at Kempton Park - 23rd March

Hello All

John's piece in Porsche Post this month has prompted me to post some details about this meet.

Kempton Park is just down the road from me and our very successful visit last year generated enough interest for another trip. There are some details about the engines here http://www.kemptonsteam.org/ and here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kempton_Park_Steam_Engines The site holds one of the world's largest operating steam engines (the largest operating triple expansion engine in fact) and it is well worth a visit for anyone with an interest in engineering. In fact the building that houses the engine is worth a look in its own right.

The site is also home to the Metropolitan Water Board Railway Society (which I joined last year while intoxicated on coal smoke) who are attempting to rebuild the narrow gauge railway that used to bring the coal to the Great Engines from a wharf on the Thames at Hampton.

Entry to the Great Engines is £7 per head and the railway people are raising funds by charging a couple of quid for rides on the train.

No need for an early start for this one. So I suggest we meet, as we have done before, at Bell Weir Close just off J13 of the M25 (postcode TW19 6HF) at 10:15 for a 10:30 departure on 23rd March..

Cheers

James

I'd be up for that -fascinating place...

Could I suggest an alternative meeting place at the Runymede Pleasure Grounds caff on the A308 Windsor Road so people can grab a cuppa??

Hi Melv

People are welcome to meet wherever they like of course and Runnymede Pleasure Grounds sounds like a good idea. However, we use Bell Weir Close quite often so people know where it is. We've also said Bell Weir Close to those on the email list and in Porsche Post so that's where I will be. Tea by the gallon is available at the engines.

Cheers

Hi Melv

It doesn't look like there will be loads of us (and in fact I will be on foot at Bell Weir Close and on the scrounge for a lift) so I don't plan to arrange dedicated parking on this occasion. Famous last words but there's always been plenty of space in the past...

Cheers

Let me know numbers in due course -I've answered Sunday, natch!

'Hi Mel
I'm sure we can find a nice spot in front of the engine house. Would that be Saturday or Sunday? Let me know.
Best wishes

I have six cars confirmed (one will not be a Porsche) plus one chap who said he was coming last time I saw him (Colin).

Say ten cars to be on the safe side?

Parking will be for Porsches only, or other classic/sports cars, so how many Porsches?

Hmm.. I'm not mad keen on preferential parking in these circumstances because I think it's more sociable if everyone can do the same thing, regardless of whether their Porsche is available on the day. However, one of the non-available Porsches is mine and I don't mind.

I have six people who have said they are coming with their Porsches and two who are coming without. Based on past experience though, I expect to see a different number on the day.

Hi gents, FYI:-

Hi Mel

That's fine "" we can fit 10 cars in easily.

When they arrive, the museum gate to the left of the main gate will be open. Tell them to come straight through (MIND THE HUMPS!!) and when they get to the A316 flyover (overhead), don't turn left into the public car park, but go straight on to the engine house. I'll be there to park them up.

I will stick something on the website today. Have you any idea roughly what time the first cars will arrive? We open at 10.30am.

Hope you can make it too!

Gaynor

Hi Mel

I've put it on the website and sent an email round to everyone, so make sure they turn up!!

Gaynor

Hi guys -good to catch up. Received this e-mail from Gaynor this morning -you behaved so well she wants more of us back!!-who would like to organise the take up on her offer?

Hi Mel

Great to meet you and your Porsche pals. I do hope you will come again, either singly or together. Perhaps we could plan a bigger Porsche Day at Kempton for next year? There was so much interest in the cars coming, I'm sure it would be a winner. We would need around 30 cars to make it an "˜event' but, hopefully, with enough notice we could do that.

Look forward to seeing you again at the museum,

Best wishes
Gaynor
