Rev counter stopped working

Gentlemen and Ladies,

The rev counter on my Boxster stopped working today on the way to work, I have looked at the diagram inside the fuse box cover and can not see any fuse marked for the rev counter on it's own or indeed any combination of items that include the rev counter.

Any ideas would be much appreciated, incidentaly the car has also had an idle problem and would stumble and then stall.

Porsche have looked at the car and say that the computer shows no faults. The problem appears to have been resolved with the exception that the rev counter has now stopped working. I have no idea if the two are connected in anyway?

Any thoughts would be appreciated...

Does anybody know if the Rev counter has a fuse? and if so which one?

Think I had better change my aftershave, not even one reply..... sob!

The rev counter doesn't have a separate fuse - it will be protected by the instrument cluster fuse. If all the other instruments are working, I doubt if that's your problem. Not that I have much idea what is, other than the rev counter itself perhaps.

Just thought this may be of interest... I was looking to buy a new set of clocks as I could not find a fuse that covered the rev counter and after checking all the connections at the back of the instrument pod I was sure the rev counter was faulty.

I found a set of clocks on Piston Heads and emailed the seller to find out what colour the plugs were on the rear to make sure it would work. Lloyd the seller, a very nice chap said that he doubted the clock was faulty and suggested it was a coil pack. He said he had often come accross this problem and symptoms.

He said the best thing to do was to spray furniture polish around the coil packs with the engine running and one should "light up like an Xmas tree" Now I know what you are thinking but I had tried everything I could, and Lloyd was a Porsche mechanic.

I tried it and Bingo one coil pack was shorting out and did light up with the spray! I know, go figure. I changed the coil pack and the rev counter was once again working. The problem with the rough running was also cured and the car is now running better than ever before with bright and shiny coil packs too!

Hope this may at some point be of use to others who may have the same problem!

Very interesting glad you solved the problem.....what brand of furniture polish did you use [:D][:D][:D][:D]

Pledge! and I am not sure if Lloyd is a member but I will email him and suggest he signs up.

The interesting point is that he said dealers were more than aware of the symptoms and the problem with the rev counter and none of them made any helpful suggestions and I did take the car to more than one official Porsche dealer who all wanted to order a new clock set for me.

So the furniture polish may have other useful diagnostic uses for electrical problems...

Many thanks to all that helped
