Rev Limiter

Hi

I have recently purchased a 1989 3.2 Carrera Convertible. I do not have an owners manual although I have (with some excellent advice from this forum) managed to download some workshop manuals. I have two queries that I am seeking advice on

1. Does anyone have an electronic version of an owners manual and,
2. Can anyone let me know whether there is a rev limiter fitter as standard to these Porsches and if so how do they work. I do not intend to race the car but I would like to know that if I aproach the maximium revs there is some sort of inbuilt safety mechanism.

Cheers and thanks

Ian

I can't recall whether my limter ever cut in on my 3.2, but I redlined it almost every time I drove it ;-)
Try it out for yourself.

Thanks for this advice. My concern with the rev limiter comes from my previous experience with a 1977 911S which I owned for two years before buying this one. I am pretty sure that when I was giving it a workout at max RPM I managed to over rev the engine and bend a valve in the No. 6 cylinder. This made the car run prertty rough until I had it fixed - and the Porsche mechanic didn't need to remove the engine to do this!!!. So at all costs I did not want to do the same to my 'new' 1989 911 Cab.

Cheers

Ian

Sounds like you had a problem with a rocker shaft rather than a bent valve.

The ECU will cut the fuel or spark so there is no need to worry. The reason I know mine works is that there is lots of power when it cuts out. I have since rotated the rev counter so I can see the needle without taking my eyes off the road.

A pic from my modified 930.

Thanks Nathan

Thanks for the advice. The idea of rotating the dials looks like a good one. I note that you seem to have a different steering wheel. How has your experience been with this?

Cheers

Ian

That is my 930 which is running 225's up front. I think the wheel is a little small for mini roundabouts and there are a lot of these where I live. At least with the bigger wheel you can see the instruments better. Maybe the wheel would suit a 3.2 better as they only run 205's up front.
