Reversing noise

When reversing on a couple of occasions and turning full on both locks I have heard a crunching sound from the front wheels. No noise in forward motion and erratic in nature. Any ideas anyone ?

Hi Keith,

I have noticed the same thing on my 2009MY Targa 4S, not sure what causes it though. I only noticed it as my previous 997 4S Cab did not do it.

I was going to get my OPC to check it out for me soon.

If they find anything I will let you know.

Nige.

I have this too. Sounds like gravel under wheels and mainly when ok full lock during parking. Forwards and reverse. Always makes me curiousl

Guys, they all do it... [:)]
Its the geometry, possibly even ackermans angle at work.
It just the tyres scrubbing the ground as the car reverses, I tend to notice it more on cold days reversing off of my driveway.

Not just Porsche that do it either..

Have had the same on my current, previous 997 and all 996's. I suspect it is due to the wide low profile tyres being pulled/pushed tangentially when on full lock and not rolling . I certainly have not had any excess tyre wear. I hope my explanation makes sense.

Hi guys,

I always get it on full lock moving forwards or backwards and understand that it is to do with the geometry angle and the large tyres. To cure it if you don't like the sound, I simply wind a bit of lock off.

Cheers
Mark

Agree totally, mine does this in the morning especially in winter when reversing off the drive, all normal

Certainly associated with cold/damp conditions and on both 997 and 996 incarnations -
when you park the car in the damp overnight crud can end up sticking to the tyres in the original contact patch which I have always guessed exacerbates the problem: if I try the same manoeuvre when the tyres are cleaned off I have not noticed the problem.

Sorry I cannot help, my car does not do it, but other makes I have had did too.

Did any of you guys have any pet rodents you have not seen for a while?[:D]

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all the advice. It is nice to know I am not alone with this noise and the wheels are not about to fall off.

Regards to all.

Mr. Ackerman has a lot to answer for - he didn't know much about radial tyres and wide rims in his day! [&:]

GT2's do it at the rear as well - but that's the LSD graunching away. Gives you quite a fright when you first hear it! []

Regards,
Clive
