Reving high when not in gear

My 944s2 is reving very high especially when not in gear, there's also a little play in the throttle, I think that usually points to an air problem but where to start, I suppose from the filter onwards or could it be something else. Any help would be most welcome. thanks

Something similar happened to my S2 and I think it was something to do with the temp Sensor so that when it was hot it thought it was cold and did something or other that made it rev higher than normal at idle can't quite remember what though which is now going to bug me until I can remember what it was.

It's got high revs from startup and yesterday tuck open at 5000rpm so i had to turn it off., bit scary going through the lights at that speed, best not say too much. tickover seems to be about 1400 and it generally sticks at about 2000rpm, how did you discover what the problem was?

Has it been jacked up incorrectly recently and deflected the floor of the drivers footwell?

This sounds more like a sticking accelerator cable than a high idle to me.

I've just had the tyres changed so maybe, I'll have a look, I had a double puncture last week on the same side, we had to use the spare and that gunk you spray in to seal the tyre, that garage had never seen a tyre like that before especially the way it deflated and fold back up, so thats a good start, thanks paul

If that is the case then make sure there is some thick carpet in the drivers footwell and hit the floor at the base of the accelerator with a heavy lump hammer. It only needs a few mm deflection to make the pedal stick

No not quite what I was thinking of then. Sounds more like the floor pan bent slightly and needs a bit of gentle persuasion to put back again.

finally found the problem the throttle mech under the bonet wasn't returning properly, I discovered this after beating the floor senseless, which I thought had solved it then on a test drive the throttle stuck at around 4500rpm which is fairly quick! I cruised into a garage (turned the engine off) and lifted the bonnet applied a big dose of wd40 to the the spring and everything near it and not had a problem since. fingers crossed, Do you think it might need replacing? I'm quite enjoying the fiddling bug.

Glad it's all sorted now but not really sure whether it will need replacing someone who knows more will be along soon I expect.
