Rich smelling fumes and fast idle . . .

Guys, is this coincidence? When I have the NS window open I get an big awful wiff of what smells like rich burning exhaust fumes, my mpg is really poor and my idle although spot on when cold, when running at normal temperature is about 1200 ish (some times it drops down to 1150/1100)

Also the period period between cold and normal the idle fluctuates (huntting)between both 950 and 1150 but when warm settles down to 1100, then when really warm idles @ 1200.

Is there a sensor or setting that could be contributing to all three? The recent MOT suggestes that the C/O etc is ok.

Regards . . .

tricky.

I'm thinking that the ISV needs cleaning to get rid of the hunting idle. The throttle idle needs resetting to 900 RPM when warm.

That may sort out the fumes somewhat, but you never know. After that, i'd start having a look at the vapor control system. The vacuum line may be off, the valve broken, the return pipe blocked, or the cannister may be really full. Although to be honest, I haven't done enough research on what that system does to be sure. It could also be something to do with the Throttle position switch, but I'll have to have a think about that one before I make any more suggestions!

I have just read on Clarks that the idle stabilizer valve can cause some of my symptoms . . . can any one provide me a guide for removing it and cleaning it? Where about's is it please? Any help or a diagram would be fab . . .

hit search, and type ISV. There's been about 20 threads in the last few months.

It's under the inlet manifold.

When you underneath the inlet manifold do you mean the black unit attathed directly to the underside of the throttle body? (Front of engine) If not what does it look like and what position is it at on the underside of the inlet manifold is it?

No. it's a 4" long by 2" diameter long steel "pipe" with two hose connections one end and an electrical connection the other. It is a right PITA to get to.
