RMS - Again

Sorry to post about the famous RMS, a little bit of a repetitive subject, my car i had noticed a leak from the RMS, now had the car serviced and have decided to keep an eye on it, without sounding totally stupid, they also metioned that the intermadiate main seal is leaking is this part of the RMS, i should know this had the car 5 years this month.

Whats the view on getting the RMS changed mine is leaving a small drop on the garage floor dont want to let it get to bad in case of causing any furthur problems.

Thanks Phil

The intermediate shaft is the one which drives the camshafts. It runs parallel to the crankshaft, lower down the crankcase. At the flywheel end there is a bearing, and a cover which is just under where the crankshaft comes out the crankcase (sealed by the RMS). The seal on the intermediate shaft bearing cover is also prone to leaking, and most indies change them at the same time as doing the RMS. It is impossible to tell which is leaking (IMS or RMS) without taking out the engine and removing the flywheel.

If it was mine, I would just keep an eye on things, and have it fixed when a new clutch is needed. If it gets to being more than just the odd drip on the garage floor then that would be the time to reconsider.

As always thanks for this information, i noticed on a previous invoice both had been replaced, my thought with the RMS was to keep an eye on it and do it when the clutch is needed, but was not sure about the IMS when it was mentioned.

I think best practice for this would be to check on it and make sure there is not a nasty great leak on my garage floor and monitor oil levels before getting it done. My Clutch has a bit of life left in it yet.

To do the RMS - IMS is only gear box out job? And Generaly the RMS is the problem that Porsche have always had problems with and not the IMS, as the RMS is the only seal really talked about.

Thanks Phil

My clutch is quite heavy so may need replacing in the next 16000 miles, what RMS should I ask for when it is getting done?

Thanks

David

yea, I was told that it is weeping slightly and should be replaced with the impending clutch next year.

Just get them to fit the latest seal - they seem to be get progressively better, but as Geoff says, not sure they have completely cracked it yet - even after about 5 design revisions! Get them to do the IMS seal at the same time, as it is only a few minutes more work, and is a preventative measure. Most decent indies do this anyway.
