RMS - is it solved yet?

The C4S went in for service yesterday. When they called, the OPC mentioned that they needed to re-book the car to carry out some warranty work. "Oh - what is it?" says I. "Just an oil leak" was the reply. "Where from?". "A place called the rear main seal..." [:(]

FYI, the car is three years old and has done 16500 miles. It's now booked in to be done on the 20th.

Anyway, they said that Porsche have modified the seal several times and that I shouldn't expect the leak to recurr. Is this special OPC soft soap or should I book space for an RMS replacement in 2009, 2012, 2015 etc etc...? [;)]

Apparently, reports from the US are that the latest seal is much better than previous versions. That's not to say it's perfect. If it is your first problem with an RMS leak at 16500 then I should think that you have a good chance of the new seal doing the job.

From what I've heard, some cars never leak, some leak & have the seal changed and never leak again, then there are those that continue to leak even after multiple replacements of the seal. Let's hope yours falls into the second catagory [;)]

I was told the same thing by the OPC at my last service. The car is a 2002 C2 Tips with 29,500 miles. I believe the engine and transmission need to come out on Tips cars to get at the seal. Had a look under the car and its more like a sweating seal than a serious leak. Am loath to have the engine and transmission out so am continuing to use the car and see what develops. I believe its been known for RMS leaks to go away. Got my fingers crossed!

I think one just has to wait to see if the problem manifests itself in the 997 series... If not then it is cured, otherwise I would say it is pot luck...
Good Luck

RMS leaks have already been reported on early 997's. IIRC, the latest seal was released after the introduction of the 997.

had one at 7000 miles changed under warranty and never had another problem, 996 c2 cab manual now at 16000 miles

True, mine is a Sep'04 and has had the seal replaced at around 14-15k miles. This was in the last 6 months so I assume that it is the "new improved" job? Only time will tell, but 4k miles on my garage floor is still "drip free"!
