RMS problem fixed on 997 ?

Hi

I am considering buying a 997s - currently an M3 owner. One of the reasons for the move is the issues BMW have had with the engine.

Have the issues reported with the 996 been fixed with the 997 - or is the jury still out ?

RMS just as prevalent on the 997 and 997S - they effectively use the same block.

A small batch of 997s have been recalled for a shim to be fitted due to poor machining too.

Bit of a sweeping statement to make ? Any figures to back it up?

I have an October 997S 3k miles and no problems at all.

If you go and look at Rennlist you will see the feedback. The part numbers are even the same as the 996 and 986.......

Sorry to say but even as a loyal Porsche nutter this issue is stopping me from going near the water cooled Carrera. I'm aiming for the new not released non Carrera i.e GT / Turbo models

Yup, the RMS is still present on the 997, BUT its nothing like as serious a problem as the M3 has had....IT's JUST AN OIL LEAK...there hasn't been a porsche in history that didn't leak oil!

Stratstones in wilmslow have recalled 14 cars (997 & 987) for the shim recall - 4 of the 9 they'd seem at the time i asked had to have work done.

Read at least half a dozen stories of RMS failures on 987 and 997 - given that many of these cars have'nt yet reached 5k miles, some not 1k, its a fair bet to say its just as bad as the 996/986.

Guy's I too am worried. I know an oil leak is a minor thing but if I keep the car out of warranty then it is an expensive annual/regular thing!

I have been thinking about a 6 series covertable instead, mor practicle and cheaper.

Dealer keen to get my business and offering me good dicscount. Thing is with a 997 I know what I am getting, I wonder if the BM has an achillies heel, anyone know?

Hi, there, thing of upgrading my 996 cab to a 997 cab.

Touch wood my 996 has done over 30000 miles and no RMS problems.

How common is the RMS problem with the 997 as I don't want to change to a car thats going to give me agro.

Guy's my 6 series convertible is great. I have bluetooth that works, sat nav with TMC and far more standard kit than you could fit in a 911. No oil leaks either! Not sure if there are any engine probs but I do know that it is a new version of their 6cyl 3litre with an electric oil and waters pumps, apparently the first engine to have this, so there should not be any fluid starvation problems.

Hi Bladeboy, No one in the register so far has let me know of any RMS problems on their cars, so hopefully the issue is not as common as it once was..

Additionally, the problem is now covered under the Porsche warranty scheme, where as previously it was excluded. So if the problem does occur, then it will be sorted as long as we continue to take-out the warranty.
