RMS same old problem

I've done a search and had a good read. My car is a 2000 C4 Tip

RMS problem diagnosed by Indy. Up to £1k to 'fix' although they will not guarantee the work. They also say it could leak again within weeks. (known problem blah blah)

At the moment there is a puddle of approx 3 inches wide on the floor after the car has been sitting for a week. Plus, on a long journey, I notice a splattering of oil spots on the rear bumper and boot lid. I have read that some people just live with this.

Question(s): If I can put up with the fact that I have a small puddle of oil to clean up and wash the car most weeks to remove any oil on the back of the car and I keep an eye on the oil level and pressure, am I ok just to leave it? ie am I likely to be causing any damage or as long as it has oil in there, is it ok?

If not damaging the car, I can't see the point in fixing it if it's not a permanent or guaranteed fix.

They don't sound very confident do they? Maybe try to find one who is a bit more positive.

A 3" dia puddle after a week, and oil on the back of the car seems more than the usual occasional drip to me. Personally, I would want to get it done, in case it turns into a gusher. The latest 997 seal is very much better at fixing the problem than some of the previous attempts.

It's quite a job on a C4 Tip, because you have to remove the complete engine and transmission as a unit. Book time to remove and replace is 7 hours, plus the time to separate the two and fit the seal. They should also change the intermediate shaft seal at the same time, along with the bolts. Perhaps 10 hours work, at £55-ish per hour, and about £25 for parts. £1000 seems a bit strong.

Just my 2p's worth, but then I'm a fussy bu**er.

I agree with Richard's advice. If you just have a "weeping" seal we normally suggest living with it and put up with the smear of oil under the car where the engine and gearbox meet and the odd spot of oil on our garage floors. However the amount of oil you have on your garage floor indicates a more serious leak.

Changing IMS and RMS is also recommended as they sit directly above and below each other and quite often we have had RMS diagnosed and changed only to find out eventually it was the IMS and vice versa, so get them both done especially as it such an involved job on a Tip C4.

Let us know how you get on

excellent advice as ever, thank you both very much indeed. Agree it's more than a little drip so I will consider options, although I'm a bit fed up spending money on this car at the moment!

I have had my '98 C2 for about 18 months, and bought it with the RMS leak. I have covered about 4,000 miles in that time and had the car serviced once a year, and I've never had to top up the oil in between. My 'oil puddle' is very small (about half an inch after a week stood in the garage) and I don't get any oil on the back of the car). The oil pressure and general drivability are unaffected.
I would agree with previous posts that you should get it looked at.

£1000 from an Indy seems high, and i wouldnt have it done by someone who doesnt think they can fix it. Whos the Indy out of intrest?
