RMS

Wife's Boxster is in with the dealer today - primarily to change the headlights which have some strange issues.

Anyway, when I did an interim engine oil & filter a few weeks ago I noticed that the 'front' of the engine had a light covering of oil. Hmm, RMS failure in progress I think. As the car was going in she asked the OPC to take a look at it. I really didn't think anything would come of it, other than a 'keep an eye on it' as the amount of oil was very, very slight, and never enough to even cause so much as a spot on the drive.

Wife arrives home, clearly in a loaner Boxster - 'some seal or other gone they say. Being changed under warranty'.

I agonised over paying for the warranty but I'm feeling quite pleased at the mo. Still can't quite believe they have just gone ahead and change it.
 
That's good Chris, its one of the positive outcomes of the Club's RMS campaign several years ago, oil seals were added into warranty cover.

Having said this, as your car is quite new, likely would have been done for goodwill anyway.
 
Certainly sounds like it.

If you are going to DIY, don't just change the RMS. Also replace the IMS post seal and the crankcase bolts above and below the RMS, and at the bottom of the casing. These can also leak, and it is standard procedure to do this. Read up on it, as it is best to put the engine on TDC and I believe it may be best to loosen the tensioners to take the tension of the chain when the IMS post is removed.

Having just been down this route as you know..... I'm sure I was told that the tensioners will need to be replaced as you have to 'dig' them out...... def needs to be in TDC.

I stand corrected though....
