Road noise

OK, I'm going to show my ignorance again. There's a lot of road noise in my 944 S2 - either it's coming up through the rear tyres or it's just the way it echoes round the hatchback that makes it sound to be at the back more than the front. OK, it's a 14 year old car, so I'm guessing that it was a bit more refined when it was new. Question is, are there any obvious bits that I can replace to reduce the noise coming up from the road ?

I don't notice any road noise from my rear, but maybe I'm used to it.

Things I can think of are:

1. Are your tyres inflated correctly? (36psi is sufficient for 16" rears)
2. What brand are the tyre, are they very low on tread?
3 How recent are the rear shocks ?

Pirelli P5000s (I think), loads of tread, no idea on the pressure (I will check). The shocks might be as old as the car for all I know - the service history is sadly lacking in detail. Are replacement shocks affordable, or should I just turn the radio up some more ?

Rear shocks are £65 each from Bert at Berlyn Services, fronts are £150, but I'm not saying this is definitely the cause.

I've never heard of P5000s ? It may be worth trying to find a local owner who you could quickly swap rear wheels (and tyres) with, just to rule them out.

Hmm, no. Now it's daylight I can see that the fronts are Pirelli P6000s, and the rears are Rapidex R2 225/50 R16s. Now I may not know much about tyres, but Rapidex don't sound like a quality make to me.

Boot seal seems OK, although I get loads of wind noise above 110mph (which I can live with). Boot carpet is good, with the underside in good nick also.

Swapping rears is probably too much effort, but it would be interesting to experience the road noise in someone else's S2, just to see if mine is noticeably worse or if I'm just being picky. All I know at present is that it's noisier than an 'L' reg Saab 9000. Anyone near Rugby fancy taking me for a ride ?

I noticed on Sunday my Turbo is incedibly noisy and uncivilised after getting used to a quiet car. OK I have solid bushes and rose joints etc. but I think they are just not very refined. I'd guess the Saab is comparable to the hearse and hence very quiet.

My cab's quite noisy too - especially when going over lumps and bumps.
Sometimes i think it's me being a bit picky because when i've got the hood down i tend not to notice anything but when the hoods up i get a bit paranoid about every sound i hear.

Well I'm in Northampton, so it would be a pleasure. I'm about to go away for a week so send me an email in about 10 days and we'll get together (though I must admit, that unknown brand of tyre is making the warning bells ring )

Just thought - Is the one way rubber bung/drain still in place at the bottom of your spare wheel well? I have been in a car where this bung was missing, and it was surprsing the amount of noise that came through the 1cm hole left behind

I must admit my 944 turbo is noisy, but I just accept it as being part of driving a sports car. And thinking about it, Tony's S2 is probably quieter than my Turbo, but still quite a noisy car!!
