Road Trip Ideas

Hi All

I'm planning a road trip in my 993 C2 with my brother from Milton Keynes, where I live, to Banchory, near where he lives.

We have almost four days at the end of March - Thursday to Sunday afternoon - and want to cover as many interesting driving roads as possible. So far we have the following ideas after 20 minutes with Google Maps [:)]

Day 1
- To the Black Mountains via the Cotswolds
- Then up to Betws-y-Coed for the night through the Snowdonia National Park...taking in the Evo Triangle at some point

Day 2
- Fast road run up to the Yorkshire Dales to do the Buttertubs Pass and any other good roads in the area
- Night in Sedbergh

Day 3
- Cross country to Edinburgh via the A68
- Night in Edinburgh. Need reasonable place to stay near centre with car parking.

Day 4
- From Edinburgh via Perth up the A93 past Glen Shee to Ballater and Banchory

Would appreciate any comments and ideas.

Thanks,

Ravi

From Sedburgh, try going over to Middleton in Teesdale and then up the B6277 to Alston (excellent road but beware of sudden height changes), then Brampton and Longtown to the A74M. Off the A74M at Moffat, then A701 to Edinburgh. Sublime and easily do-able within your timescale.

A93 will be fun.

Nick

After N. Wales leg overnight at The Quay, Deganwy and eat at Paysanne - 5 mins. walk from the hotel. Drive the Great Orme while in area ( listen to exhaust echoing off cliffs ! ).

I would head up the west side to Glasgow not the Edinburgh side and do Loch Lomond, Fort william, Fort augustus route and the east side of loch ness, Inverness then either over the hills to Banchory or do all or part of the coast and come down thro Keith, Huntly.

The main road route from Glasgow, Stirling, Perth, Dundee is boring if you go that way use the coastal A92 after Dundee and take a left at Stonehaven and over the hill to Banchory

Thanks for the great ideas!

Keep 'em coming [:)]

Looking forward to the trip even more now. May need a couple of weeks to fit it all in though [:D]

Nurburgring trip either on your own or with a company called Nurburgring UK (run by a great guy called Dino)i have been on a couple with him in my 944 turbo, always a great crowd and he find the most amazing back roads for driving, trips to the ring can be so much more than just driving around the ring,if you know what i mean[:)]

I also have a Polar 94 M 993 C2 non varioram,not on the road at the min.

Hi

Think there are still roadworks on the M90 so check traffic reports on Glasgow - Stirling road especially if you are travelling at busy times.

My penneth worth:

If you are crossing from North Wales to the east coast I would recommend coming from Cheshire [Wilmslow] in to Derbyshire via Pot Shrigley and then heading North to Glossop before coming east again over the Snake Pass - look for the piles of dead bikers at the road side shrines.

Before the A57 hits Sheffield you turn off left to the Shrine Inn and head cross country to Penistone. This is a great little b road with 3 or 4 tight switch backs over narrow bridges for the thrill of an echoing engine note. After the dull over crowded West Yorkshire roads head north east of York to Pickering and take the A169 out to Whitby [beloved of Evo and other motoring tomes] before coming back across to your chosen route north to Scotland. I have driven the A68 in an Elise a few years ago and loved every mile of it.

I drive the Penistone - Shrine road every week and the most important thing I have learnt is that the pleasure of a B road blast is more in the chosen time of day than the chosen route. Early morning before the pensioners lunch club put the small dog on the parcel shelf of the Toyota Yaris and head out is much more fun and well worth loss of lie in.

Enjoy your trip, whichever route you take.

Jon

Thanks Jon, Cameron & Mark.

Got a great trip put together now with some extra options if time allows.

Fingers crossed for the weather [:)]

Will post some pics in due course.

Thanks again!

in Yorkshire, having an overnight in Sedburgh means you'll probo miss some of the good roads, but if it works out this might be a good compromise

Settle - Ribblehead - Hawes - Buttertubs - Reeth - Tan Hill
