Road Vibration

Im experiencing constant road vibration through the steering on my Boxster S. Got new wheels and Pzero's fitted and balanced so dont think the issue is there. Besides i can feel it at all speeds and it does not make the steering shake as is usual with balancing issues. At really slow speed it feels like the wheels and steering are are a little loose. Just passed it MOT with no issues. Any one any idea's as this is driving me mad, surely the steering should be tighter.

Shouldn't be any vibration to speak of.

I've sometimes felt the wheels were out of balance (usually on the way out of the country on a trip [&:]). But funnily enough, hit a smooth French Autobahn and all is shake free again [8|].

The tyres are on the right way round aren't they? I'm pretty sure they are directional.

Most N rated tyres are "assymetrical" rather than "directional" - as in they have an "inside" and an "outside" but can rotate either way...but yes, this is something to check.

Also, the balancing equipment of high st tyre fitters is pretty woeful - may well pay off to go to a performance specialist and have your set up checked over.
 
How old is the car? And how many miles are on it? It could be drop links, track rod ends, worn bushes etc. But I wouldn't expect that in a newish car unless driven on really bad roads. Could it be warped brake discs? Although that would normally shake the steering wheel a bit and feel worse when braking.
 
Thanks for the suggestions, the Car is a late 02 with 50K on the clock. Discs, tyres are all relatively new. Looks like im going to have to book it in and get it checked out. Ill keep you posted

Hi, had my 987S on the road today for the first time in 4 weeks, I had been moving it forwards and backwards in the garage to avoid flat spotting the tyres but for the first 10 miles or so felt as though I'd lost all my balance weights. Took it easy then put some heat in the tyres on some bendy roads and hard accel out off corners by the time I'd done about 20 miles vibration was gone. Not saying you could be suffering the same flat spots but thought I'd share my thoughts.
Would add my discs must of been damp when I put the Box away weeks ago and it took some careful bedding in to get rid of the shudder on applying brakes ( I warped a set of BMW 3 series discs by not taking it easy with rust coated discs a few years ago).
Moral of the story I must get out more and get some decent miles on the Boxster and a few less on the Cayenne.

Great to see some one else in the same boat .... went to get the Boxtser S out of the garage a few days agoand its battery was completly flat (had left the DashBoard GPS and Talex plugged in .. another reason we will be doing the Porsche "In dash" system next Boxster - no more ugly wires and no need to remember to unplug it).. Any way .. jump started it off the Cayenne and put the battery on charge (also now have a battery reconditioner on order as well) .. So yesterday took the Boxster to Birmingham instead of the Cayenne .. A lovely blast up in 4C sunny skies .. Used the M40 boths ways so went lid up :( .. needed to be up there for a particular time and had to get back in a hurry as Sue wanted to go to the Cat show at Olympia .. So blast back home, pick up Cayenne and took that in to London ... Came to the same comclusion as you .. need to take the Boxster out more :)

As a side note I have to say the standard of driving in Birmingham was terrible compared to in London
 
Well took a flyer on the most obvious cheapest option and bought new drop links from Euro Car Parts, £52 all in. Fitted em the other night and Bingo..., vibration free tighter steering again. Once again thanks to all for your help - great forum.
