Hi there,

Im doing my 'summer' holidays with a big roadtrip on the Porsche :

London - Amesterdam
Amesterdam - Celle
Celle - Berlin
Berlin - Dresden
Dresden - Munich
Munich - Salzburg
Salzburg - Innsbruck
Innsbruck - Baden Baden
Baden Baden - Stuttgart -Waldeck
Waldeck - Luxemburg - Brussels

Depending on the location Im staying minimum of 1 night on the destinations, up to 4. Any help that you might have on these locations ( nice hotels, nice restaurants , things to do ), please share !

My car is a left hooker so no problem with that, plus I found out how to change the beams and the display to km - covered on that.

Anyone can recommend an AA equivalent for Europe ?

Insurance is covered as well.

Please share insights and tips, nurburing is not an idea - miss would kill me if I troll around - shes already in dispair about touring germany and austria in 18 days and having only a Porsche luggage space - Im happy actually :)

Cheers,

Hi Proenca

Recently did Rotterdam-Salzburg in my old Golf GTi - very enjoyable trip. I'm doing the same run in the Porsche in a few weeks time.

Halfway point for me was Heidelberg. Very nice town to stop for a day and visit. Highly recommend the Crowne Plaza in the centre, secure underground parking and walking distance of the centre and bars/restaurants.

Really enjoyed the drive through Germany and Austria. Good roads, good services. Did Rotterdam terminal to Heidelberg in a gentle day, 2 1/2 hours in the morning, same in the afternoon. Leg to Salzburg was the same. With a long break for lunch it was still less than a day each time without pushing it. Total driving time non stop would be about 11 hours, 830miles.

Sorry you can't stop at the Ring - I hope to do a few laps this time. Enjoy your trip.

Tim

What sorts of things would you be interested in seeing en route?

Basicly I would like variety- green , mountains, castles , vineyards... I dont want to see the same all the time - I browsed quite a while and seems that Germany have a lot to offer but they just forgot to say where.

For example : I see plastered everywhere that it's possible to do Vineyard trips, Hot air baloon rides but they forget to say where. When I google it german only sites appear and if I call non english callers appear. Guess that's half of the fun.

I intend in staying in Waldeck since its the Riesling wine region and I booked a couple of nights there. Also Celle and Dresden look quite pretty. We'll see.

Im kinda of worried about the AA tow equivalent - which one should I use ?

Brings back some rather interesting memories, I would recommend 500s Euro for any on the spot speeding fines... Otherwise, enjoy & have a great time.

When I did mine I didn't book anything in advance, left more freedom to stop and stay wherever etc. Finding good hotels I don't think will be an issue.

parcel service a change of clothes for wife somewhere halfway for pickup
(eg fedex to a fedex office) and then send what you dont need back
(normal parcel so you pick up from local postal depot - cheaper)

or just buy stuff on the way and parcel it back as you go !

note this last option could get v expensive !!!

Wow - sound one great trip. So much fun enjoying the foreign roads - I did a mamoth trip last year via Holland and Germany to Norway, Sweden and Denmark (although the Swedish bit was by accident!).

Can't offer any recommendations though, as the last time I was in Innsbruck was in 1973 and I was quite young then!

Have a great trip!

Be aware that many German cities now have emission zones, certainly Stuttgart, which you need to display a zone sticker..
plenty of info on the www about this...- so long as you know about it !!

Just got our all sorted, disc can cost from 7euros but thats for the life of the car, so no hardship.

Cheers,

I did a 3000 mile trip last week, in fact I went to innsbruck, salzburg and stuttgart. Im also did Venice and a few other countries.(8 in all) I can email you the fact sheet if you like, it has every road and lots of info, about 60 pages worth.

Sounds like a fantastic trip and someting I'm considering later this year when I finish my contract. I'm doing some work for a bank in Luxembourg and have my C2 Cab out here. I'm on the road at weekends and the countryside is superb. I've not got to the German autobahns or the ring, but it's on the list.

If you're passing Lux, you must drive into the Grund. Not for speed but it's a valley that runs through Lux city. There is a tourist office www.lcto.lu and you can view in English. Also remember that August is dead in Lux. If you want to meet up, give me a ring on +352 621 784 961. Also, don't take the main road from Lux to Bruxelles, the B roads have good views. Takes a bit longer but worth it.

Enjoy your holiday.

Also, goto Vianden. It's north Lux on teh German border and has a dracula style castle. Worth seeing. Thee's a cable up teh hill and the view of the valley is something to see.

Were on the outskirts of Luxembourg in August on our way back with the register trip..
I've been looking at the castle trip..

If you would be as so kind to email the document aswell.

cheers garyw
