Rocker cover bolts

Thought I would have a look at my cam teeth today (having just replaced an exhaust cam on the old S2!) and found that most of the cover bolts 'clicked' as I loosened them, and then could be twisted normally by hand.

A couple of others have a totally different "˜feel', they have some resistance as if the bolt is actually twisting, rather than being undone. Any experience here? The car has got quite a good service history, I guess that they have been removed more than once, but I really don't want to snap them!! Ta...

When I removed the rocker cover to change my chain tensioner pads 4 (I think) of my rocker cover bolts sheared right off. They're a funny shape with a small (maybe M6) thread, a shoulder and then a thin stem up to the bit which you see with the allen head. There's then a seal and metal washer thing at the top which seals it. It seemed to take next to no effort to shear the ones which broke but they shear at the thin stem bit so there's plenty to get a hold of. Be prepared to replace some of the bolts though. I had to drive around with gaffa tape over some of the holes while I got hold of replacement.

Cheers for that! Sounds like a couple will shear then. How did you get em out - mole grips?

Where did you get the replacement bolts?

Replacements from OPC. Just make sure they send the right ones, I had a full set of them and they were wrong first time :(

Also, there are short and long ones, I can't remember how many of each or where they go in the cover but obviously you need the right ones.

I got a couple out with mole grips, a couple by welding a nut to the end of them.

Good Luck!

Replacements readily available from OPC. Bizzarely the long ones are cheaper than the short ones, short one's are £17 each, long about half that.
