Rocker switch and red light on side of centre console

Every so often I remember that there's a rocker switch and a small red light on the right hand side elevation of the centre console (i.e. the switch faces into the driver's-side footwell). There are also two pozidriv-head self-tapping screws which hold the carpeted panel (about 5" x 3") on which the switch and light are mounted into the console. It's clearly a factory fitted item.

Does anyone have any idea what this switch actually does? If you switch it on with the ignition on the light flashes but nothing else happens so far as I can tell.

That's the cover plate for the OBD plug that someone's put the led for the alarm into. Not sure what the switch is, maybe an isolator for the interior sensors?

Are we talking about same panel? I have OBD cover on left side of tunnel. On right of tunnel I have pozidriv screw held plastic panel (carpeted unlike OBD cover). Not sure of its size but it is bigger than the OBD cover. I've removed it occasionally to access wiring inside tunnel. Can't see its purpose (other than what I've used it for!). Mine however does not sport a switch and/or flashy light.

You're right Mark, I was getting mixed up as mine is a left hooker. I'm not sure what that one is for but I had a Techart phone holder in it's place when I bought the car. The correct cover (with no led or switch) was in the glove box and it took me ages to work out what it was. I swapped it back when I stopped using the brick like Motorola phone sometime in late 2001.

Thanks for the replies gents. I think the suggestion that it's to do with the alarm system is probably about right. I'll have a play with it later and see if I can work out its exact function. The panel is "factory" as I tried to write above, but the switch may well not be.

I had that switch on my Cab. It was to isolate the sensors in the upper corners of the windscreen so you could set the alarm when the hood was down.
