roll cage in or out

Should I leave my roll cage in or take it out of my 87 turbo. It is going to be more of a road based car
What do you think?
Dave

i know mate,just not sure.
its a half cage behind the drivers seat cant fit in the top half of the rear seats.

Depends if you've got harnesses fitted and where they attach to.

Mine has a harness bar as can be seen; harnesses clip into eye bolts that go into the rear seatbelt mounts and then over the harness bar:

If you can't hit it,and don't want to use the back seats, I'd keep it. Removing it will leave some holes in the carpets and in the rear arches.

The lugs are deadly. If you arre certain that you cant hit it then I see no reason to remove it.

I was only asking as I am looking for a full roll cage with a harness bar but, I would like to keep my rear seats in (for the kids) [:)]!! Can these be custom made? I guess so, it's probably just a question of Wonga [;)]. But no worries. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Many thanks in advance and, sorry about the hijack!! [:D]

A race cage requires a diagonal brace, which can be fixed or removable. The harness bar will have to be fixed though and this will preclude use of the rear seats.

I have been recommending Rollcentre Racing for years, because theyre cheap (but not nearly as cheap as they were) and theyll adapt their cage to your requirements - no front tube lugs for example, for a rear-only that doesnt have dangerous protrusions. I dont see how they can add a harness bar without a permanent cross brace though, and even if theyre happy to make it full width across the back-stays, then youll still lose the use of the rear seats.

My suggestion would be to have harness mounting plates welded to the leading edge of the load deck (remembering where the fuel tank is), which will suit your requirement and theyll be HANS-friendly too.

well the lugs dont stick out, and its not in the way plus my boys are too big too go in the back. one has his own car and the other is learning so soon to be redundant in that department!!
just a case of getting used to it i guess not had a car with one in before.
looks like its staying in.
thanks for all the comments

Are your kids going to wear helmets all the time? I really don't like the idea of adding steel bars at head height to a road car....[]

Lets see some pictures of yours Dave. Itd help if you left the drivers seat in its ususal position, if you move it to get in and out, as I do.

Thank you for your very interesting comments Simon. I am going to give them some thought [:)]. Paul, yes I see what you mean mate, I never thought about that [8|]. Although Sid' does have a rather hard head, i'm not too sure about Florrie' [:D]. I may just turn it into a dedicated track car (albeit one with a MOT) and remove the rear seats completely. That way I can have a full-on cage and harness bar. Just like a proper racing car!![8D][:D]!!

Id leave the rear squab, no matter what you do. Weighs nowt but it keeps out so much road and transmission noise. For the same reason Id leave the carpets in. I removed mine in my series one car, but quickly refitted them sans sound deadening, like Ed H has done with his S2.
