I've been thinking about putting a half cage in my RS for some time, what are my options?

Are they pretty much the same weight? And just how difficult is it to fit?

There are 2 schools of thought here, bolt in or weld in.
Hiego do bolt in cages that use the seat belt mounts etc to fit the cage.
In my opinion the only way for true chassis rigidity is a welded in cage.
The latter is some times too permenant for some owners.
There was a guy in the 964RS register who was selling a bolt in cage as he is having a welded one done instaed.
Its your choice.

Hi Mick. I think if I had a comfort 993 RS, I would go for a bolt in cage, but get it painted yellow to match your car. I would talk to Mark at 9M about it as the 964 RS lot rate him highly for cage installations.
 
I saw just such an installation on a Rubystone 964RS --- done by Marc --- and the job was quite superb, and on time !
 
Mick, send me your email, I have plenty of photos of my half cage from design, fabrication, welding, painting and installation.
 
I'd probably go for the bolted in option, as I don't want to start welding bits to the car.

Just had a fab wkend at the Ring, getting to know the place a bit and the corners started to flow, but that also meant that I was pushing the car harder.

After seeing the accidents there I'm just feeling a bit exposed without a cage. Not bothered me on any other track but the Ring scares me somewhat.

So far I've done 20 laps in total, and managed to get the time down to 8:55 BTG (I know you're not supposed to time etc etc but it was done in a Data Log which I didn't see the result until the eve on a laptop). If I'm to start chasing the clock then a bit of protection can't hurt!


BTW, is there an after market full cage for the 993RS?? Does it have to be custom made or is there any off the shelf bolt in cage? As the Clubsport has welded in cage I guess Porsche won't do a bolt on one for the standard RS?

Can't even put food on the table at the moment let alone getting a CS!![:eek:] But then if I have a major prang resulting in a right off then I might well just consider that![;)]

How's your car running anyway Paul, haven't seen you on track a while, have you turned it into a garage queen or something? [:D]

Mick, no plans for that...I have owned a Morgan for 23 years and intended to keep the 93 for some time......It sounds like you have done some good things developing your own car, I think that is important with these cars as they get older, you know exactly what you have and if you do have to spend out £££, there is less pain if you get the use out of it.
Have a look on Gtclassics site, Paul Mc has a heigo bolt in, pictured in the maritime 64 with the special engine.
 
do 964 and 993 use the same cage???

I don't think I'm in the position to trade up yet but if anything does happen to mine (the way I'm tracking the thing I wouldn't be too surprised if anything does happen!) I'd try to get a CS next, pref yellow as well!! [:)]
 
Depends on the model of cage,,,they could fit, but if you look at the weld in matter cages, the rear suspension mount points are different,,,which sort of makes sense considering the completely different rear suspension set up. You could get a generic cage to fit both.

if and when I get rid of mine, either because I'm suddenly become a milliuonaire or a right off crash, I'll have to think of a silly offer to tempt you with! [;)]
 
lets wait and see... thought I was setting you up with opportunity to offer me £7.50 and half a mars bar...that would be silly [:D]
There is a chap locally who has offered me £8k before and is disappointed I haven't sold it to him...gives you something to guage things on [:eek:]

Quite honestly the CS is a better track car, the cage adds rigidity and maybe a sense of occasion, but as an overall package I would say the regular RS is one to have.
 
The idea of an CS is tempting but mine is serving me well at the mo and I'm spending some money on instruction for now jsut so I can extract the most out of the car. Could do with having the dampers re-valved though, don't think they're doing much at the mo, and the car gets really unsettled riding over kerbs and bumps.
