On saturday I was up at Amd www.amdtechnik.com up in Bicester (Oxford) for a Rolling road with my former TT clan !

my numbers showed my car had a few 'problems' esp with the high end varioram power not appearing !

261 bhp @ 5692 <<< where's my varioram ! Std is 285bhp !
249 lbs @ 5198

I've had an oil leak from what appeared to be frm the rocker cover gasket.... so from london to bicester to london to birmingham and back to london tonite I got through an extra 3.5 litres of Mobil 1 (oil tank is 13.5 litres!) [][]

but that was only half the story.. with the varioram porsche engine system which as you all know open up from about 4500rpm all the way up to 7000rpm to enhance the power to the top end was missing !! [:'(]

and I though the surge after 4000 was already amazing.. so there is more to come .. wow ! [:-]

the varioram wasn't opening up at all.... thankfully it is probably a pipe which is unconnected (quite common problem, or so Andy from AMd tells me) *** but is this really the case *** ??? *** !!!!! then I will get an instant surge with another 25bhp with a peak somewhere at about 6000.... of about 285bhp [X(]

the torque without the varoiram is pretty much flat at above 240lbs from 3000 through to 6000rpm.. but does anyone know what the standard Torque figure should be ???
so I don't really know what it will do beyond the std 285bhp with it's old sports exhaust and K&N panel air filiter.. [8|]

but the benefit of a rolling road has been proved again and an engine fault discovered that prob' otherwise wouldn't have been noticed ! I mean I already though it was fast ! and there is more to come.. oh yea ! looks like I won't be needing that remap.. yet ! [:D]

so not quite or rather it will never will be the 400bhp of power house from one of the guys in the latest Audi S4 V8 estate or the Torque from another in an MTM chipped Audi TTR (260bhp and 350 lbs torque!)

Hopefully the chaps at www.911uk.com might have a RR in 2005, what do you all thing ?? and no, it ain't a power race.. consider it about finding out the efficency of your engine and uncovering faults there may not be noticed otherwsie.. and you get a nice graph of the bhp & torque as well..! all for about £40 a run !

regards

I hope you are fixing the oil leak soon Sundeep , that sounds like an awful lot of oil to lose from the rocker covers, meanwhile the underside of your car is getting a liberal spraying of oil which every bit of muck and road grime will adhere to, plus it makes the car horrible to work on .

i was certainly a lot....

Amd also mentioned that I should take off the under tray that's below the engine ?

helps with cooling and doesn't stock up all the grime..??

According to the manual, at 5690 output is approx 260bhp, so you engine is spot on.

The extra bhp tops out at 280 at 6000 revs.

The thing with rolling roads is that they are only as good as the guy operating them and as far as the comment about the u/trays, I am with Maurice[:D]

".....8 hours on track in Dorset ........."

And which track is this that I don't know about Maurice????

an experience I had might help you sundeep:

I had my 993 rolling road remapped and the operator (well known and respected 993 wizard) the same thing - my varioram wasn't working on one of the banks of cylinders and therefore I was 25-35 bhp down on the stock figure...

Anyway he completed the rolling road tune as he said he was able to get the actuator to do it's stuff by suddenly dethrottling and then stamping on the throttle again to create some vacuum.

Later on in the session he said that one of the reasons power seemed down was that my pretty worn tyres were causing the back-end to slip a little on the rollers and not hold traction at peak power revs!! I like to think my baby was too powerful for the rollers!! ha ha. anyway he completed the runs in 5th which stopped the traction problems.

I few days later I got my car checked at a specialist and OPC who both said my varioram was working perfectly... and this backed up my hunch as the car was absolutely flying... with noticable step in power at the correct rpm.

So to sum up I'd say get a second opinion - there's so many variables when getting power figures on rolling roads and from a lot of reading I've been doing I think varioram can 'trick' people in to thinking it's not working when perhaps it's fine....

cheers chaps...

ex-964 techie... good one, that I like ! I did decline their suggestion of taking off the engine undertray at the time.. though I should check with the real experts first ! [:D]

As for the power, those were the peak figures..! there was nothing above 5690rpm as it tailed of from that point..[]

which is why I am more convinced that the varioram ain't working.. as the power delivery is progressive but there ain't no 2nd wave.....??

mental note to self : to really get myself the handbook in english !

my man is having a look at the car tonight.. so I'll see... damn I need some luck with this car.... that last owners really did not look after it []

Maurice,
What is this Merry Christmas lark - don't panic me - [] - I'm nowhere near ready to even think about Christmas!

Oil leak update..... turned out to be from the Oil Filter..

so the car went back to Tognola Engineering to get it fixed, as they fitted at its service back in August..

alll sorted..

now just got to find that varioram !

to update...

The leaking oil filter was from the engine oil filter (on the right side) which from what I know is the one more likely to fail.

Although my view is that such failures are very rare across all euopean manufacturers except oddly Porsche ?

This filter was another "made in the USA" part, it has lasted about 3500miles since the last service. I know that Porsche have had problems with faulty oil filters from the USA before.

Tognola have simply fitted another USA made Porsche branded filter. Their view was simply I was unlucky to have suffered from another faulty one.

My own view is that the fact they are manufactured in USA is the root of
the problem. I was quite frankly amazed to learn that these were manufactured in the USA. Based on my experience of US autos & parts I'm not surprised it failed!

At my next service I will see if there are any "made in Germany" Oil
Filters that can be used! hopefully there are ones I can...!
