Roof Clunk Noise on Opening Clamshell

Hey Guys.

This is my first post as a recent member to the club so I'm getting used to this forum so I'm sorry if this subject has been covered but I've tried searching first but maybe I've used the wrong search terms.

I went out in my car yesterday & as I lowered the roof, I heard a "CLUNK” noise which is now happening when you open and close the roof. It doesn’t seem to be anything to do with the roof as it only happens when the Hood Cover Section (Clamshell) opens but not closes.

I’ve looked around to see if I can see anything catching or sticking but I can’t & I certainly don’t want to poke around in there!

It sounds as though something is catching when that section opens as it's a single clunk noise which occurs when that section opens but not closes.

Does this mean anything to you? Is there something I can do to rectify it easily, ie, a simple fix, something which can get caught up & I can free myself?

I've attached a photo of the section making the noise for clarification.

Many thanks, Rick.

Same as this?

Does the roof open and close symmetrically?
Hi, thanks for taking the time to answer.

No, it's not the same issue because the roof operates normally.

The single clunk noise (sounds like a latch is catching) is the only thing currently happening when the Roof Cover Section opens to either retract the roof or close the roof. No other noises present.

Cheers.

Hi

I recently had a similar problem with my 987.2 roof, it turned out to be the black plastic cover piece, which is a push/slide fit, working loose and catching when opening and closing the roof. This piece covers the hinge mechanism. At the time I found a very useful thread (I think on Planet-9) which described how to refix it perfectly, unfortunately I now can't find it!

Hope this helps.

Chris

Hi Chris.

Thanks for the reply and very useful information for the future.

I don't believe it is the same issue as my roof operates fine with no noises. Someone has suggested that the clamshell catch needs periodic oiling/grease and in this extended dry period I suppose it could've dried out so I'm having a mechanic look at it shortly as I can't see exactly where and I don't currently posses any grease!

I'll be sure to update this thread when I've got to the bottom of the issue though.

Cheers.
