If you can hear the motor going but no movement, then it may have stripped it's gears, which although I have not (yet) experienced, seems to be a known problem. You can at least buy new ones though.........

In the first instance try lifting the hood as far as you can by hand (don't overstress it) and then pressing the normal open/close switch. If that doescn't work find teh microswitches and give them a 'gentle' tap/ flick the activating lever etc.

That's what I thought. Can the OP please include details of the car, it's helpful if people put location (vague is ok) in profile, and at least model of car in signature. [
If there is no noise at all then it sounds like the problem is electrical. I'd go to Clarks Garage and read up on there about how it should work (it's a simple arrangement) and start finding out what's wrong.

(One bit of advice. Keep the sunroof clutch as loose as you possibly can without rendering it useless. It will save a fortune on the white plastic gear wheels. OK, maybe not a fortune but you see what I mean!)
