Roof panel removal

Ok, a numpty question I'll admit. I tried to remove my roof, but couldn't get the panel off.

I disengaged the clips at the front of the panel as instructed in the manual. Then I opened the roof , and waited for the clunk as the mechanism disengaged from the back of the panel. But nothing.

What am I doing wrong? It's bound to be something simple.
 
I had the lone of a 44 convertible over the last weekend and had the same problem when trying to lower the roof.

I eventually got it to work, but truthfully don't now how. I assumed it was the aftermarket immobiliser because once I had tuned it off the roof motor came to life and the roof came down. Probably wrong but check to see if it could be that.

Having just been out for a run at lunchtime today I thought that it was an excellent opportunity to get the roof off for a bit. What works for me is:
  1. Undo clips at the front.
  2. Ensure that the ignition is on, but the engine not running (i.e. ignition in position II)
  3. Press the sunroof button in the direction you would press it as if you were raising the roof (towards you from recollection)
  4. Lift out the roof section by raising the rear edge and then sliding backwards and place in the roof bag in the boot (if you have one - bag, not boot that is)
To refit the roof, again the engine must be off but the ignition on.

As Graham says ~ turn ignition to first click and press the sunroof button. Crane your neck backwards and you'll see the bars retract into the roof instead of raising it.

Undoing clips and sliding the whole thing back is my preference too.

Reverse procedure to replace ~ put the wind deflector "flat" and put the panel on with the front edge in the sunroof aperture, the rear edge on the roof itself. Get in car and slide it all forward.

Ignition to position 1 and press sunroof button again and you'll see the bars come up and reingage with the roof again.

You'll love it James. I had a very ropey 944S many moons ago and it wasn't until I pulled the roof out of my latest steed last night that I realised why I'd kept the old one for so long. The panel is so large that it feels almost 'convertible' with the roof off and with the deflector at the right angle, you don't even need to adjust the stereo.

However, I was a little concerned this morning as I drove past one of Redhill's Chav schools that flob was about to arrive in my lap [:'(]
 
I've had a few true convertibles in my time, and I do enjoy the wind in what's left of my hair [:D]
 
Hair is overrated, especially in convertibles [:D][FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"]I have to say I have only had the roof out of my current 944 once - so I could stand through the hole to fit a DAB aerial. I find the car picks up a resonance at speed that gives me a headache when the roof is out. Possibly not an issue if you aren't driving on an uncongested motorway though.[FONT=verdana,geneva"]

Yes, I've found that once you're over about 30 mph this gets annoying. Dropping one of the windows by a cm seems to do the trick and at motorway speeds its best to experiment with the angle of the deflector for optimum anti-resonance [:)]
 
Iv taken mine out today, but can't seem to get the blasted rear connectors to connect even, so when you tilt it up it is uneven, and a nice crunching noise occurrs from one side.
How can I make sure they attach to the roof panel the same each side???
 
Well I managed to get the roof out no problem this afternoon. It was the ignition thing that did it. Thanks guys.

I didn't get any resonance at all, even when I was travelling at a "reasonable rate" on the motorway. It must be the wind deflector angle that does it.

Of course, I might be posting again tomorrow asking for help getting it back in again [:)] The car is currently sitting in the garage with the roof still off. I'm hoping it won't rain tomorrow, so that I can just leave it off until the weekend. Luckily we have a secure car multi storey car park at work (there were loads of convertibles in there today with the roofs down all day).
 
Sounds like you have stripped your gears, which is very common when they are taken out for the first time in ages - there is supposed to be an element of slip in the drive to prevent it happening, but it seems to tighten up over time and the teeth then give out.[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"]I just got my indie to fit the spare set he keeps in stock when mine went, but I think Clarks Garage has a good how-to if you want to do it yourself.[FONT=verdana,geneva"]
 
Had my roof out today for the 2nd time since i've had the car. Bloomin awful. The noise above 60mph is unbarable. I got no resonance once the deflector was fully up (i.e. vertical). I don't think i'll bother with it again.
 
The answer is to get the full cabriolet - then you really get wind in the hair - the early onset of baldness kicks in at around 90.
The other advantage of the cabrio is that you get to hear all sorts of interesting noises coming from various parts of the car that were not noticeable with the roof up[8|]
 
Roof out above 70 is indeed noisy, but I still like it. [:)] And the boys love it when they are sitting in the back.

I believe my roof will continue to see regular removal. *

i am going to have to try this, my roof has only been out to polish in where the sunroof sits.

will have to go driving with it out the next time and by the sounds of it i will have to bring some ear defenders haha
 
I dodn't have any trouble at an speed. Even at motorway speeds the noise wasn't much greater than with the roof on. I did get some nice sunshine on my scalp, and a bit of a refreshing breeze around my head though. The wind deflector was in its normal position (about 30-40 degrees from the horizontal).
 
I often remove mine even if motorway speed is likely and dont find it a problem either.

(might be a reflection of how noisy it is with the roof in and not quite flush which mine isn't)
 
I only tried it once to be fair, but I found a drumming in the cabin that was more surges of air pressure than actual noise. It wasn't pleasant. I might have been travelling over 70 I guess...[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"]I'm the sort of person who thinks there is no substitute for a real convertible, hence the MX5. I never even felt my 911 Targa was properly open top and even cars with a roll hoop like Golf cabrios don't feel "proper" open top to me.[FONT=verdana,geneva"]
