hi all

toying with the idea of driving down to the alps over christmas / new year for a spot of skiing, vin chaud and general christmas festivities and am wondering how all the kit is going to get down there.

does anyone have any experience of roof / ski rack / thuile boxes systems, or even know if they even exist. have done some initial searching without much joy.

regards

Keith
I used to use thule roof bars all the time. The trick is to use higher feet mountings on the rear in order to give a level load and wider bracing.
I may even have a spare set of new thule foot mountings as they were only sold in sets of four if any ones interested[:)]

You'll be wanting the Porsche 'roof transportsystem'. Not easy to find them new - but there may be a set still left at a dealer in Germany. There certainly was back in December last year. Email Porsche in Germany and they will help you. Otherwise they come up on eBay from time to time.

I used this and a huge Thule roof box to carry the camping gear down to Le Mans this year. It worked very well.

Porsche will tell you that a roof box should not be used on air cooled cars, as it disrupts the airflow, which could cause over-heating.

Myself and others have expereinced no such problems..

Have fun

Have a look on the impactbumpers.com website one of the guys had a top box for a 911 for sale on the parts page.Genuine Porsche item so may be able to get to fit with the mounts available above

I have used the original roof racks with the Porsche roof box for a one week vacation to the South of France during the hot summer of 2003. Four people in the car, fully packed and no overheating problems whatsoever.

[edit :] I sold the roof box and roof racks.

Hi Keith,

Reading the replies it looks like you may already have a number of options. However, the 993 'Tequipment 911' Accessories brochure shows a 'Load carrier system' (Part no. 993 801 055 00) which is basically a set of roof bars to take up to 75 kg. Also listed is a Ski holder (Part no. 000 044 000 04). Not sure if they are still available and will probably be an Arm and a Leg if they are!!

Trip sounds a great idea. Wish you best of luck.

Cheers,

Mark

Ordinarily I would question the need for a roof rack. Fiona and I have toured europe twice in a 993 and a 964 - you'll be amazed at what goes in with careful packing. Mind you, we didn't have skis, (or bicycles).

Thule 951 feet at the front and 952 feet at the rear along with 760 or 761 cross bars and you're away.

Last year I transported a 14 foot extension ladder using these roof bars. Also tied the ladder down to tow hooks front and rear. Car was a 993tt. Distance was 700 miles! The looks on people's faces was priceless.

Porker993 - agreed there is certainly more room in a 993 than one may otherwise think. We regularly travel in it with 2 adults, 2 kids, 2 dogs and a boot/cabin full of clutter.

For this years Le Mans trip, there were 2 adults, 1 child, full camping gear, including, large tent, gazebo, fridge (a small, but proper one), chairs, table, stoves, gas, food, drink, drink, pots/pans, clothes for 3 etc, etc. Simply would not have been possible without the top box! But to the casual obsever, we must have looked rather odd...

We should have a competition - who can get the most in a 993. Right now I think you're in the lead, Tim.

Take a look on impactbumpers.com someone selling roof rack to fit 911(SC) would be worth a look as is only £50

I have a porsche roof rack that I bought off ebay for transporting my mountain bike around - the look on peoples face is fantastic! Fantastic piece of kit - superbly engineered.
